Imagine

John Lennon

Topic of the song

The song goes against everything that is on earth, and wishes for a Utopia. Lennon was asking us to imagine a place where everything is not divided and where things like religion, possessions, and government do not exist. He believed that world would be a much better place.

Song lyrics of "Imagine"

Imagine there's no heaven
It's easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people living for today

Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people living life in peace

You, you may say
I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one
I hope some day you'll join us
And the world will be as one

Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people sharing all the world

You, you may say
I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one
I hope some day you'll join us
And the world will live as one

Lyric Analysis of "Imagine"

Lennon said that there are lots of things that can happen inside our own minds that are impossible in reality... so "imagine". John Lennon gives us instances, like if there was no difference between religion, nothing to kill each other for, or if people gave up on being selfish, and thought about the present instead of the future, and what happened in the past.

The borders of countries exist in real life, but in the mind, can be omitted. Nobody has material possessions that they can call "theirs". Everything belongs to everyone, and no one is greedy or hungry for power. Its like all beings on earth are one big family. Its so pleasant to imagine everyone sharing the world instead of fighting over imaginary boundaries.

We all know that these thoughts will never be transferred to reality, so John Lennon is considered a dreamer. He knows there are many people with the same vision as his own, that dream of peace, prosperity, and equality. He hopes that someday, every single person will have that same dream, so that it will not be a dream anymore, but become a reality. There would be no separations of our countries or beliefs, and we'll live together as ONE.

"Imagine" Bias

The song has a strong political message that is shown with a beautiful melody. Lennon realized that a softer approach would bring the song to a larger and wider audience, who hopefully would listen to his message.

Later, Lennon thought that the song should have been a Lennon/Ono collaboration. he got the idea from Yoko's book Grapefruit, with things like "Imagine the sky crying..." or "Imagine you're a cloud".

Few people wondered if Lennon included a message throughout the song as well. In his own video, he was dressed to look like a cowboy and Yoko Ono was dressed as an Indian squaw. This could be some kind of message about all of the cultures getting along with each other.

Overall Mood of The Song

The overall mood is the want of peace all around the world. Also it is very relaxed and moving towards others. It is considered to be anti-establishment, yet in a sugarcoated way.

Thoughts on the Song

I believed that the song deserved its own kind of category in music, because its the only kind of song that I have ever heard that has to do with peace and prosperity coming alive in reality, and how we could all get along together. It shows great emotion throughout the song, and many different points are made in the lyrics. I wonder if this belief of peace and prosperity on planet earth can be achieved in my own lifetime, but (like he said) we only need to worry on the present, and look back to the past.
