What is Social Phobia?

It is a type of anxiety problem. Anxiety is a state of uneasiness and apprehension. (It causes extreme feelings of shyness and self-consciousness that build into a powerful fear. People who have this easily talk to family and friends but when it comes to talking to strangers, speaking in public, or meeting new people can cause extreme stress and/or fear.) What is Select Mutism? (interesting fact)

Select Mutism is when people are so shy and scared that they only talk to certain people and refuse to talk to different people or in certain places. They easily talk to people they are comfortable around or certain places. People often mistake their silence for attitude, rudeness and disrespect-fullness but they dont talk because they feel uncomfortable and afraid.

What are Signs or Symptoms?

  • Faster heartbeat
  • Faster breathing
  • Freezing up
  • Unable to interact
  • Panic attacks
  • Feeling afraid or nervous
  • Rush of adrenaline and other chemicals
  • Body/mind act if there is real danger
  • Fight or Flight Response
  • Feel self conscious and uncomfortable about being noticed

How Does it Affect Someone?

It can cause people to stay at home and miss important events. They might then feel lonely or disappointed about missing them and missing out on friendships and fun. They also might not get the most out of school and miss a chance to share their talents/learn new skills.

How is it Diagnosed/Treated?

A doctor will evaluate you by asking questions. You can also be diagnosed and treated by therapists and friends/family. Another treatment option is medication.
