Benefield Parent Newsletter
April 24, 2020
Greetings Parents & Guardians-
Thank you again for the work you are doing with your child at home! It was so great seeing so many of you on Monday night for our Virtual Parent Night. The link to that presentation is attached below in case you missed it.
The Discovery cluster principals are talking next week to begin drafting plans for students to pick up their belongings shelter in place is lifted. If you have any questions, you can always email or call me at shonda_stevens@gcpsk12.org. You can also reach out to your child's assistant principal or counselor. Their information is below.
Our teachers are working hard to keep things simple, manageable, and focused on essential learning. Please continue to communicate with your child's teacher. We understand that students and families are in different situations.
Proud to serve you,

Teacher Appreciation Week
We will be honoring our teachers for their hard work and dedication May 4-8. Please show your appreciation for your child's teacher by sending an email or note.

Digital Learning Day Survey
Thank you for your survey responses. Broadly grouping, parents were either appreciative of or asked for:
- More Digital Classes (mini-lessons, recordings, small groups, etc)
- Checklists (to know what students should do and/or turn in)
- All material on one platform
There were other great questions, that require deeper and more thought-out explanations than is possible in a newsletter. Please know that we heard each and every comment. We appreciate the opportunity to reflect and to plan with your thoughts in mind.
Digital Learning Day (DLD) Grading
- We do not plan to retroactively grade for weeks 1 and 2 of DLD (before Spring Break).
- All work must be completed digitally via eCLASS and/or Google Classroom.
- Each week, teachers will take one weekly grade in Reading and Math.
- Every other week, teachers will take one grade in Science, and Social studies.
- These grades can combine some or all of the work done that week in that subject.
Our plan is to keep things as simple as possible and to focus on essential learning to help your child toward the next grade level. We realize that families are facing many challenges. If you have a concern, please contact your child's teacher.

Kindergarten Online Registration
WHO:
Rising kindergarteners - children who will be five years old on or before September 1, 2020 - and their parents or guardians.
WHAT:
Register for the 2020-21 school year.
WHEN:
Beginning April 7, complete online registration on the BES website. Once we have reopened, we will plan activities to welcome and introduce our new kindergartners to Benefield Elementary. We will communicate out, but please also check our website for updates on these activities.
WHERE:
Visit the BES website to register online. If you’re not sure if your child will attend Benefield Elementary, visit the county's "School Look-up" online at GCPS SchoolLocator. Be careful! Zillow is not always correct!
WHY:
Completing online registration will help your child’s teacher to be ready to welcome your new kindergartner on the first day of school— Wednesday, August 5, 2020. Look online for other important calendar dates for the 2020-21 school year (pdf).
HOW:
New this year, much of the registration process, including the uploading of documents needed for registration, will be completed online. Most document attachments (PDF, JPG, DOC, PNG, etc.) are compatible. The file-size limit is 2 MB. Families that are unable to obtain the required immunization and/or screening documents due to the COVID-19 situation will be given additional time to obtain those documents but should go ahead and begin the online registration process.
NEED HELP?:
Contact our registrar, Phyllis Swift or Serenity Estis. We can even set up a video chat if needed.
