YES Parents,
With a new year comes opportunities for your student to meet new friends and interact with other adults within our building through YES Club Days. While the students love Club Days because they are a fun time to play a sport, build a bridge, explore science or learn a new dance routine, to our teachers they are a great way to build relationships between students and staff. For several years, we have worked on the goal of making connections with our students. We set about accomplishing this goal by finding fun ways each month to work with kids. We hope that your child loves Club Day as much as the staff, because we want the time to be an enjoyable experience for everyone.
Thank you for entrusting us with your child each and every day,
Pete Forster

Media Memos with Mrs. McGilberry
The Book fair will be held Feb. 27th - March 3rd. Look for the Volunteer link coming soon!
Third and fourth graders will take part in a special grade level event this spring. Third graders will head out on the Oregon Trail to live and play as the pioneers did in the 1840's. The fourth graders will go on a Reading Road Trip after reading many different genres in the Media Center. Their Road Trip will consist of visiting 11 different cities in Alabama, along with an activity for each city.
We are in the process of purchasing the supplies to make both of these fun days happen. All 3rd and 4th graders need to bring $2.00 to Mrs. Mac by Wednesday, February 15th so we can get the materials ready for our students.
Art Action with Mr. Daniel
Our third grade art students are re-writing and illustrating their favorite story! They're also developing a colorful story-board of their favorite scene in the story.
The fourth grade art students are putting finishing touches on their Legacy Logo Collages. These collages consist of bold vivid colors and rendering techniques that express how these art students see themselves.
The fifth grade art students are using their creative ability, proportion and rendering techniques to develop realistic soda can drawings. These cans will display each students' own original logo design and color scheme.
During the month of February, Yarbrough's Art Dept, in conjunction with Richland's Art Dept, will have an Art Exhibit in the Auburn Public Library. Please stop by and support our awesome young artists!
Notes with Nurse Julia
Do you know about the Auburn City Schools Dental Clinic?
The ACS Dental Clinic offers comprehensive dental care to qualified students at no cost. They celebrate 47 years of operation this year. The clinic is located at JF Drake Middle School and transportation is provided by school vehicles during the school day. All clinic dentists and hygienists are licensed in Alabama and most of the dentists have private practices in the area.
To qualify for services, a student must receive free or reduced meal benefits and have no private or ALLKIDS insurance. Students with Medicaid are eligible. Applications can be found on the ACS website (www.auburnschools.org) under the Services tab.

The Counseling Connection with Mrs. Walsh
Dear Parents,
In Guidance class we are studying diversity and learning the importance of putting ourselves in others’ shoes before we act. Please discuss with your children the differences they see in people and how we can respect differences through accepting various points of views.
February 6 – 10 is National School Counseling Week. Thank you so much for allowing me to serve as your child’s school counselor. School counselors are put into schools to help students reach their full potential. Historically, school counselors served more as a teacher, providing education with vocational and career development. Today counselors focus on three domains: academic, personal-social, and career. We also collaborate with parents and teachers to better ensure student success. Counselors utilize community services to enhance the comprehensive counseling program. Services provided daily by counselors consist of guidance lessons, small groups, individual sessions, crisis interventions, collaboration, and student planning.
I would also like to introduce my counseling intern, Ms. Jacy Williams. She comes to us from Auburn University and is working in the capacity of a counselor under my supervision. We are happy she is with us. She is doing a great job getting to know our Y.E.S. Counseling Program and building strong relationships with our students.
After our diversity lesson, we will begin with our career lessons. Please take time to share with your student about careers that are in your family. Help your students set high expectations for themselves and their futures.
Quote of the month:
Respect others by being courteous and kind.
*Others have worth as human beings.
*Being courteous to others means showing respect and honor toward them as valuable people.
*Kindness is a result of respecting others.

Venture Visit with Mrs. Roberts
Rube Goldberg Machine Project
I was so PROUD of the hard work your child put into their RGM project. Every year I’m so impressed with what they come up with for their machines! I also want to thank the parents that worked with their children to help them be successful. I will be putting the children’s videos on my website for you to view next week. I need to give a very special thank you to the moms and dads that came and helped me in the classroom, I truly appreciated the extra hands!
Spelling Bee
We are very proud of Shreya Ejantkar for being the Yarbrough Spelling Bee winner and representing us at the Lee County Spelling Bee on Friday, February 3rd! We know she will do a great job! Also, congratulations to Sara John for being our runner-up.
Science Olympiad
On Saturday, February 4th, Yarbrough’s two Science Olympiad teams will be at Auburn University all day competing against more than 700 students from all over the state. These students have stayed after school every Thursday, and worked very hard at home practicing and studying for their events. I am very proud of the students making this commitment and the parents that have stood by them to make sure they are a team player! I have coached Science Olympiad for 14 years, and it helps when others are willing to jump right in and help. I would like to thank those helping this year: Ms. Anderson, Mr. Chuck Browne, Mrs. Brandt, Mrs. Chenier, Mrs. Day, Mrs. Mooty, Mrs. Thomas, Mrs. Jennifer Thurow, Mrs. Turner, and Mrs. Zutter. I’ll see all 50 students and parents at AU Saturday morning at 8:15.
Chess
We have started learning and playing Chess in Venture. The students look forward to this unit, and I enjoy teaching it. Chess promotes critical thinking and problem solving which is so important in helping our children to become better citizens.
The Computer Lab Latest with Miss Ball
The students continue to explore and utilize Office 365. As we practice our keyboarding skills, the students will discuss and type about the qualities, characteristics, and attitude of what it takes to be a leader. We will share facts and quotes about Black History leaders. The students will also type their “I had a dream speech” and will share them with their classmates.
Fitness Fun with Coach Smith
In Mid February, we will begin our Jump Rope for Heart Unit. Fundraising envelopes will come home on February 10th. All donations will be collected online again this year. The last day for donations will be Wednesday March 1st. We will have our final jump rope competitions on that day during scheduled PE classes.
We have been blessed to have Coach Bodden with us for her internship. She will leave us and head to Opelika Middle school on Friday, March 3rd. Make sure you give her a big hug and tell her thank you.
Season 2 Fitness & Handball Club will begin on Monday, February 27th. This will include Fitness Club A and ALL Handball Club members.
Leader Lessons
February Habit and Manner Focus:
Habit 3: Put First Things First
Key Phrase: I will do my homework, then play!
What this habit looks like in action: I do my work before I play. I know what my responsibilities are, and I do them based on what is most important. I practice self-control.
Habit 4: Think Win-Win
Key Phrase: I believe we can all win!
What this habit looks like in action: I want everyone to a success. I don’t have to put others down to get what I want.
When there is a conflict, I look for solutions that will make everyone feel good.
Manner Focus: Keep your area and the area you share with others clean. (classroom, desk, bathroom)
