Basic Yoga Classes

Find Your Center
Basic Yoga uses simple yoga poses (asana) and breathing techniques (pranayama) to settle the mind and challenge the body. Excess energy and stress can be relieved and the yoga practitioner can find balance again. Regular practice will lead to positive change in mind and body. More than simple exercise, yoga uses stretching, strengthening, balance, and breath control to develop physical stamina and mental focus, to support the whole person. Yoga is for life.
Monday and Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. at Stockert Youth Center
Classes are $5 each, or pay in advance at $35 for a month.
Ideals, Principles, Opportunity
The Eightfold Path
The Noble Eightfold Path is one of the principal teachings of the Buddha, who described it as the way leading to the cessation of suffering and the achievement of self-awakening. It is used to develop insight into the true nature of phenomena (or reality) and to eradicate greed, hatred, and delusion. The Noble Eightfold Path is the fourth of the Buddha's Four Noble Truths. It is also known as the Middle Path or Middle Way.
Principle of Yin/Yang
The concept of "yin and yang", is used to describe how seemingly opposite or contrary forces are interconnected and interdependent in the natural world; and, how they give rise to each other as they interrelate to one another. Many natural dualities (such as light and dark, high and low, hot and cold, fire and water, life and death, and so on) are thought of as physical manifestations of the yin-yang concept.
Opportunity for Growth
Although the place we practice is not as new and private as the one in this picture, at Stockert Youth Center, we find the opportunity to learn to minimize distraction, which is one of the goals of yoga practice. Our lives are often fraught with conflict, distraction, and lack of focus. Having our yoga classes in a busy, public place gives us the opportunity to practice our focus in every class.
