Japan is an island nation in east Asia. The characters the make up Japan's name mean sun origin, which is why it is referred as the Land of the Rising Sun. Japan's capital is Tokyo, Japan also has the the worlds thenth largest population, with more than 126 million people.

Feudal Japan

From the 12th century until 1869, Japan was ruled by successive feudal military dictatorships. Japan had a system of classes in society the emperor being on top but having little power, the samurai had power protecting peasants in exchange for farming the land for food and paying a tax.

On December 7, 1941, Japan attacked the US naval base at Pearl Harbor and declared war, bringing the US into world war 2. After the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945, Japan surrendered on August 15.

Modern Japan

On January 7 1989 Japan's emperor Hirohito died and his son Akihito ascended to the throne starting the modernization of Japan.
