Hello Families, The motto in school this week is:
I say GOODBYE to my negative self-talk.
It’s natural for our children to have both positive and negative thoughts throughout the day. There is no point in feeling shame for having a negative thought because that only invites more negativity, and it’s normal to experience a range of different thoughts and feelings.
However, you can teach your child to say goodbye to a negative thought without giving it more than its due, and when possible, replace it with a more encouraging one. After all, our children are not influenced by a single, fleeting thought but rather from the repeated messages they tell themselves.
"What you tell yourself every day will either lift you up or tear you down. Choose wisely."
-Unknown
How can we help our kids be good to themselves? The first step is self-awareness. Help them become aware of the quality of the messages they tell themselves. You can share with your child how to:
1. Examine
- Determine if their thoughts are helpful or not.
- Are they encouraging or discouraging themselves?
- How does their self-talk make them feel?
2. Eliminate
- Let go of unhelpful thoughts. Simply tell them goodbye.
- Initially, they may have to say goodbye repeatedly. That’s normal.
- Changing a habit requires repetition.
3. Exchange
- Replace unhelpful thoughts with more encouraging thoughts they can believe.
- Even small improvements make a difference.
- Help them develop helpful self-talk.
“It’s not what we say out loud that really determines our lives.
It’s what we whisper to ourselves that has the most power.”

Wishing you a wonderful week,
