Estimadas familias de Woodcrest,
It is hard to believe that Memorial Day weekend is here! It’s a sign we are in the final stretch of the school year and entering summer. Let’s finish the school year strong – we want every student to finish the year with their best efforts and to feel proud of their work. I have seen so many wonderful things this year from our students and more to come in these final days.
We have a couple of exciting upcoming events that are supported by our PTO – a theater production for Woodcrest students from CLIMB theater and our school-wide track & field day. We are so fortunate to have a strong and committed PTO and I am grateful for the experiences they help support for our students.
CLIMB Theater will be here on Tuesday, May 30 to perform an interactive play around empathy and resilience. Performances are tailored to different age groups, so there will be a performance for students in kindergarten through 2nd grade and another performance for our 3rd and 4th graders.
Then, on Tuesday, June 6, we will have a fun track and field day at our school. This event is for students to bond and have a little fun together while outside giving some track & field events a try. We will need parent volunteers to make this event a success, so please watch for communication from the PTO about volunteer opportunities.
As a reminder, there is no school on Monday, May 29 in observance of Memorial Day. We will return to school on Tuesday, May 30.
Be well and enjoy the beautiful weather!
In partnership,
Jaime Nymann
Principal
Action needed: Insurance coverage renewal
Do you or your children have health insurance through Medical Assistance, MinnesotaCare and Minnesota Family Planning Program? If so, please note that your health insurance needs to be renewed. Avoid losing your coverage by being prepared for your renewal.
Here are the steps you need to take to keep your coverage:
- Update your information: Make sure Medical Assistance, MinnesotaCare and Minnesota Family Planning programs have your current contact information. Update your information here or call (800) 657-3672.
- Be on the lookout for a renewal letter in the mail: Watch for official information (mail and text messages) with instructions on when and how to renew coverage.
Why is this necessary?
During the Covid-19 pandemic, the Minnesota Department of Human Services paused the renewal process for Medical Assistance, MinnesotaCare and Minnesota Family Planning Program. With the end of the Federal COVID-19 Public Health Emergency Declaration effective May 11, 2023, the Minnesota Department of Human Services must resume renewing membership annually.
Learn more about how to be prepared to renew.
Book return
All books must be returned to the Media Center by this Friday, May 26.
Yearbooks have arrived!
The Woodcrest Spanish Immersion yearbooks have arrived. All the students that have purchased a yearbook will receive it later this week. If you are interested in purchasing a yearbook, you may do so in the main office - the cost is $12.00 per yearbook. We can only accept cash and/or check. If you are unsure if you purchased a yearbook online, please connect with Yesica.
Interns for the upcoming school year
First, we are very excited to invite Amity interns to our program once again next year. Interns join us from Spanish speaking countries and come here to increase their teaching experience and become part of our learning community for the year. We have work to do to prepare for their arrival in August. One of the biggest aspects of their experience is their host families. We will need host families for our interns starting in late August. Some details to consider if you are interested in hosting an intern:
Hosting is usually for half the school year, to give the interns different experiences with different families throughout their stay here.
You must have a spare bedroom for the intern; they cannot share a room. A shared bathroom is fine.
The host family provides three meals a day to the intern.
Interns are usually recent college graduates or about to complete their teacher preparation program in their home country.
We currently have three interns to place for next year, two females and one male. All are from Spain.
At school, the interns will act as language ambassadors and apprentices to the teachers with whom they work.
Please reach out directly to Sra. Nymann if you are interested in hosting an intern.
Celebrating our 2022-2023 retirees
Congratulations to our staff members who were honored and recognized at last week's retirement event. As a learning community, we gather to recognize their tremendous contributions to our schools and community. We thank each of the retirees for their tremendous commitment to the students of Spring Lake Park Schools and wish them well in their retirement!
Read here as they share any words they wanted to convey to our community about their journey and plans for the future.

Learning while playing?
Yes, learning while playing can happen! Here is the perfect example: some of our students here at Woodcrest Spanish Immersion built their own game pieces and cards to practice multiplication and division problems on a board!
Celebration of Learning
It was AWESOME to have so many families at our celebration of learning. It was great to get into classrooms and see all the great work students have been doing! Tons of fun was had at the carnival - games, food trucks, face painting, nine-square in the air, gaga ball, dance instruction, and the playground. THANK YOU so much to staff and volunteers for providing this great opportunity for parents to connect with teachers, families to connect with each other, and to validate how hard our students have been working! A special shout out to SLP High School National Honor Society members and Girl Scout Troop 17985 for volunteering. Another big thank you to our face painters, Jan Ward and Nicole Yochem, who stayed extra to finish up the line of students, and two special families who shared their special talents - Unicycling and Juggling by Ana Wigert and her family and balloon creations by Cam Miller and his mom.
Staff Appreciation Week
Thank you so much to everyone who donated food, gift cards, time, and handwritten notes to our staff. We ended the week with a sandwich bar on Thursday and prizes on Friday! They make every year at Woodcrest great and it is so much fun to celebrate them during this special week.
Last Call to Donate to Summer Reading Initiative
Donations will provide books for students to read over the summer! There are two days left to donate here.
Spring has Been Busy in our Prairie Garden
The Prairie Garden Relay is an annual all school event put on by our Green Team. Throughout their five years at WCSI, students participate in each stage of maintaining our garden outside the front door. During each session, a book is presented and examples of garden species are explored.
Kindergarten
Kinder students gathered seeds out of prairie flowers and gave them to 1st graders.
1st grade
1st grade learned about soil and planted the seeds. Seeds are set up under lights by the library hallway where students can view progress. They also made coffee filter flowers.
2nd grade
2nd grade students took seedlings and planted them in individual pots with more space to grow. They also did a flower design challenge.
3rd and 4th grade
3rd grade students will plant flowers in our garden or another destination next week!
4th grade students prepared the garden for spring. Each year, we leave the garden undisturbed until a week of 50 degree weather for critters to come out. Students then clean up old growth, put up ropes to protect new flowers, and put down new wood chips to refresh the walking path through the garden.
