SOCIAL ISSUES BOOK CLUBS
Good Afternoon Fifth Grade Families,
We are excited to share that we have begun our next reading unit entitled Social Issue Book Clubs. Yesterday we began by reading a wonderful book called Fly Away Home by Eve Bunting. It is a story of a young family living in an airport. Students were so forthcoming with their thoughts about homelessness, joblessness and inequity in education. Later we brainstormed a list of social issues we are facing in our world, country, state, city, school and homes. We would like to share them with you. Please see the pictures below. It is incredible that students so young are already aware of so many issues we are facing in our society.
We will continue reading social issue picture books with themes from our lists from now until the Thanksgiving break. Then we will get into social issue book clubs with small groups of students sharing a common book and sharing how their characters respond to a social issue. We hope that you will continue our classroom conversations at home. Please ask your students about what we are reading, learning and talking about, you will be amazed!
The working definition we are using for social issues is: Issues that affect many people, not just one person or character.
If you have a great conversation at home; please share as we would love to hear about them!
Ms. Goodwin, Ms. Briselli, Miss DeRoy and Mr. Pearson
