The Election of 2008
- The election was between Democrat Barack Obama, and Republican John McCain.
- The candidates ran on a platform of change and reform in Washington.
- Domestic policy and the economy eventually emerged as the central points in the last few months of the election campaign after the onset of the 2008 economic crisis.
- Obama received 365 electoral votes, and McCain 173.
The Effects of 9/11 Since the Attack
- American also planned to remove the Taliban government.
- The Patriot Act was passed
- Long airport lines, full body scans, and the occasional pat-down was necessary for air travel.
The War in Afghanistan
- The United States was supported by close allies
- The U.S was later joined by NATO beginning in 2003. Its public aims were to dismantle al-Qaeda and to deny it a safe base of operations in Afghanistan by removing the Taliban from power.
- Key allies, including the United Kingdom, supported the U.S. from the start to the end of the phase.
