Holiday Reminder -- School is in session!

Under the new calendar that was adopted last spring, THERE WILL BE SCHOOL TOMORROW on February 17, 2020 (Presidents Day). We look forward to seeing all of our students, faculty, and staff at school on Monday!

Online Course Selection for Grades 5-7 This Week at Corner Middle School

Last week, the counselors and administrators from Corner High School met with CMS 8th Grade students to complete their online course selection for 2020-2021 school year. This week, the process continues with our students in grades 5-7.

Students received their orange (5), blue (6), or pink (7) folders two weeks ago and should have already returned them to the office or counselor for review. This week, Ms. Chloe Whitaker -- our counselor -- and grade level teachers will assist students enter the online course selections into the computer so that the faculty can schedule classes for the fall.

On Sunday afternoon, a phone message will be sent through Blackboard Communicate to the families of those students who have not turned in their parent-approved course selection forms. It will inform those families that if their student does not have a course selection form SIGNED BY THE PARENT/GUARDIAN submitted before we do the online entry, the student will not get to make course selection. As a result, their electives will be selected by the administration and the counselor as we have a district-required deadline to complete this process. If you receive this call, please make every attempt to see that your student turns in his / her signed form.

Over the next several weeks, we will be releasing more information regarding registration dates, fees, and summer schedules.

Peer Helper Club Sponsors Random Act of Kindness Week

The Peer Helper Club -- led by Chloe Whitaker and Lindsey Hoggle -- are sponsoring the CMS Random Acts of Kindness Week. Filled with a week of activities and classroom lessons, the group hopes the time spent in RAK this week helps decrease people's sense of anxiety and sadness and increase individual happiness and healthiness. This is National RAK Week, so families can join in and participate at their work places, homes, and communities, as well. See the graphic below for the activities of the week.

Second Semester Dates of Importance

In an effort to assist families in their planning of appointments or other activities, the chart below lists some of the second semester dates of importance at Corner Middle School. We ask that you try to help us by making every effort to have your student at school during the spring ACAP. The ACAP is the Alabama Comprehensive Assessment Program -- our new state test -- where your students are tested in English Language Arts, Math, and Science. Hopefully, having these dates ahead of time can help us avoid absences. Please remember that these dates are subject to change.

Spring Sports Schedules

Attached are the schedules for Baseball, Softball, and Track for the spring of 2020. Please remember that these schedules are subject to change based upon inclement weather or other factors. We have also included the schedules for CHS Baseball and Softball. Thank you for coming out and supporting the Corner Middle School Yellow Jackets!!!

Attendance Matters

We continue our look at schoolwide attendance at CMS. We can NEVER UNDERSTATE the importance of school attendance.

The state of Alabama defines a student as "chronically absent" when he or she has 18 or more absences. Moving into the second semester, we adjust the threshold for being AT-RISK to anyone with nine or more absences. You may notice the large number of tardies to school and check-outs from school which are as concerning.

Letters have gone out describing the referral process to the Jefferson County Family Court's Early Warning process for those who fall into the at-risk column. Families, please have your students at school at school and on-time each day!

Quote of the Week . . .

"He who every morning plans the transactions of the day and follows out that plan carries a thread that will guide him through the labyrinth of the most busy life."

--Victor Hugo--

Video of the Week . . .

We continue our school focus on MINDSET. In the quote above, author Victor Hugo describes the task of planning your day. It sounds so much easier than it really is, however, individuals with a GROWTH MINDSET know the importance of having a plan and following through with it. This week's video discusses the importance of time management in carrying out your personal plan for success!
