Words of the Great Awakening
The Great Awakening started in the early 1700s when church leaders were worried that colonists were loosing their religious faith. Church leaders wanted to bring back the religious duty held by previous generations. Many ministers that lived in the middle colonies began holding revivals. Revivals are emotional gathering where people gathered to hear sermons and declare their faith. Jonathan Edwards was one of the most important leaders. He was a pastor if the Congregational church and Northampton Massachusetts. Edward's dramatic sermons wanted sinners to seek for forgiveness for their sins and face punishments in hell.
