Principal's Post
Friday, March 10, 2023
Dear Angell Community,
A snow day in March is not something I expected. I hope everyone stayed warm and enjoyed the day. I look forward to seeing everyone back on Monday. Please be advised that our scheduled Spring Fun Picture Day has been rescheduled to Friday, March 17th.
Also, a kind reminder that Thursday, March 16th is a non-attendance day for students as we are hosting our virtual spring conferences. If you have not had a chance to sign up for a slot yet please use the links provided in the Parent-Teacher section below.
Our 5th graders had an incredible camp experience this past week. Although Monday was wet and cold, our students and staff persevered and had a lot of fun and creating lifelong memories. Please enjoy photos from camp that are posted throughout the Principal's Post.
One other important item to highlight is our 1st Occupation Day at Angell scheduled for April 14, 2023. We have a request form posted below for any Angell parent interested in participating. Our goal is to expose our students to as many occupations as possible and inspire our students to think about future possibilities.
Also, Mrs. Chudler and Mrs. Greager have been highlighting different executive function and organizational strategies throughout the year. Please enjoy Mrs. Chudler's article below on flexibility.
This month we’re talking about flexibility, which is the ability to change plans when you are faced with challenges, mistakes, new information, or setbacks. More simply put, flexibility is how we adapt to change. We see signs of flexibility in children as young as one or two years old and we model flexibility for our children in how we respond to changing plans or setbacks. We work so hard to build routines and understand the importance of routine and predictability. However, as adults, we know things happen all the time that are out of our control and mean we need to adjust. Helping our children develop flexibility in elementary school provides them with a skill they will use throughout their lives.
According to Peg Dawson and Richard Guare (257), the following are some expectations of flexibility in children at different age levels.
TK/Kindergarten
Adjust to a change in routine or plans (with warning)
Quick recovery from small disappointments
Share toys willingly
Grades 1-3
Play well with others, including sharing and not needing to be in charge
Accepting redirection when not following adult instructions
Adjust easily to unplanned situations
Grades 4-5
Move on from disappointment
Adjust to and accept changing plans due to things out of our control
Complete open-ended homework assignments (with assistance)
Now let us think about how to help our children build flexibility:
Introduce change slowly, just a little at a time
Break down tasks, focusing on one step at a time
Stick to schedules and routines when you can
Whenever possible, give a little warning when something is going to change
Practice coping strategies such as taking deep breaths, counting to ten, doing jumping jacks, etc. Ask your child which ones they like best, they may be able to teach you some new options 😀
Provide choices. For example, ”we had to cancel the playdate, would you rather we build a blanket fort or play a game?”
Children’s books that encourage flexible thinking:
- Not Norman: A Goldfish Story by Kelly Bennett
- Ish by Peter H. Reynolds
- It’s Okay to Make Mistakes by Todd Parr
- Ada's Violin: The Story of the Recycled Orchestra of Paraguay by Susan Hood
- The Curious Garden by Peter Brown
- The Adaptive Chameleon by Efrat Haddi
- Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day by Judith Viorst
