Texas, Our Texas
Dear Cougar Family,
Last Friday, the heartbeat of CSHS boomed from the Commons and down the hallway as our amazing Drumline hyped our Friday and Saturday night games. As I stood there, watching our talented students representing Band, Cheer, and Crew, I couldn't help but get teary-eyed. For one, I always get a little glossy in the eye when the drumline plays on fall Fridays, but on last Friday, it was different. With each resounding beat, I kept thinking about the schools throughout Southeast Texas that were not filled with students--the empty hallways, the repairs needed, the displaced families who didn't know where life would take them next.
The needs are great, and they will not be subsiding any time soon. There are seemingly countless opportunities to give and help out our fellow Texans, but I wanted to take a moment to highlight some of the things going on at CSHS:
1) The Fine Arts Department is collecting donations for the United Way of Houston through their Give Change to Make a Change Initiative. Bring your change and help fill the bucket.
2) Student Council has placed collection boxes for household items in the Commons Area. They are collecting toothbrushes, blankets, personal sized shampoo/conditioner, towels, diapers and wipes, feminine hygiene products, deodorant, baby food and formula, and canned goods.
3) The Cougar Club passed a bucket at the athletic games last week to donate to athletes in need at C.E. King and Katy High Schools (the original opponents for CSHS and Westlake, respectively). I do not yet know the total amount we will be able to donate, but I had the privilege of speaking to the head coaches at each school regarding the fundraiser beforehand, and both were so thankful, kind, and positive in the light of incredibly difficult circumstances.
4) As we move ahead, we will continue to partner with C.E. King High School. At this time, I am not sure what their needs will be. Their school had water in it above the desks. Coach Fitzhenry told me they have lost all technology in the building, and they were still assessing their needs. I have also reached out to the principal at Angleton High School. When a plan has been made, I will send more information to the campus about how we can support these high schools.
Texas is a strong, diverse, and beautiful state. The videos and pictures that have surfaced as part of the Hurricane Harvey Disaster Relief demonstrate just that. Thank you for all you have already done to support our fellow Texans. The road ahead is long, but it will not be a lonely one--we're in this together.
Have a good week! And, as always, COUGAR PRIDE!

School Spirit Contest During Advocate
Make sure you show the Fight Song and Alma Mater videos during Advocate so the students can learn them. For teachers new to our campus, our students sing the Alma Mater after every game. It is absolutely my favorite tradition we have!
Be creative and see how you can get kids to learn the words, so they are ready to go when we have our first pep rally.
Record your class creatively performing either the Alma Mater or the Fight Song and submit all entries to Mrs. Parkerson via email by Thursday, September 14. One class winner will be selected for each song to receive a pizza party. Winners will be shared via Twitter on Friday, September 15.
Content Mastery
Content Mastery & Credit Recovery have been combined this year due to staffing and space constraints. Please keep this in mind when you are sending students to CM.
Remember that ANY student is able to receive help in content mastery. Teachers can start sending students down to room 1048 after instruction (with a Content Mastery pass). Please send any supplemental aides or resources students may need to complete an assignment with them when they come along with a completed CM pass.
Questions? See/email Coach Walsh.
See Something? Say Something.
Please talk about this with your advocate class.
