January 2024
Lewiston Porter Intermediate Education Center
From the Principal's Office
Dear IEC Families,
Welcome back! I hope this message finds you rested, rejuvenated, and ready for the exciting opportunities that await us in the second half of the 2024 school year. The winter break has given us all a chance to recharge, reflect, and spend quality time with loved ones. As we step into a new year, I want to express my gratitude for the collective efforts that have made the first part of the academic year a success. Our students have shown growth and dedication, our parents unwavering support, and our staff an unparalleled commitment to fostering a dynamic and enriching learning environment. As we set our sights on the months ahead, I encourage everyone to approach this semester with enthusiasm, curiosity, and a commitment to growth. Each day is an opportunity to learn something new, overcome challenges, and make a positive impact on those around us. When our students return they will be administered the winter ELA and Math Aimsweb benchmark. Please remind your child to do their best.
This term promises to be filled with exciting events, academic achievements, and personal growth. Our teachers have been hard at work preparing engaging lessons, and we have some fantastic extracurricular activities planned to enrich your educational experience. Our first exciting event will be our One District, One Book initiative starting next week. ODOB is a program designed to create a shared reading experience across our school and community. Every student can vote on their preferred choice between two books. Each student will receive a copy of the chosen book to keep, then, every family reads it together at home while enjoying some packets from school. The shared reading experience will be supported by enriching activities at school. Please follow along the ODOB opportunities. The two books the students can vote on this year are: The Nocturnals and The Lion on Mars.
Please get out and vote! Parents, your continued partnership is invaluable to our school community. Your support, encouragement, and involvement contribute immeasurably to the success of our students. We are all on this educational journey together. Voting is at the Lewiston Public library, Ransomville Free Library & Youngstown Free Library from January 5th-12th.
Let us make the most of the remaining school year, embracing challenges with resilience, celebrating achievements with pride, and fostering a supportive and inclusive environment for everyone. Together, we can make 2024 a year of growth, success, and memorable experiences.
Welcome back, everyone! Let's make this term one for the books.
Sincerely,
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day is observed annually on the third Monday of January. This year, it takes place on Monday, Jan. 15, 2024, King's actual birthday.

IEC K-Kids Spreading Holiday Magic to the Lewiston Senior Citizens Center
This month the K-Kids Club created beautiful holiday favors for the Senior Citizens December Holiday Dinner, held at the Center's location on River Road. Students worked hard to create 100 favors for everyone who attended the dinner. “It feels good inside to know that I’m helping to make someone’s holiday a little happier,” said 5th grader, Olivia Heath. We are sure there were a lot of happy faces at that dinner! Way to go, K-Kids!
Joy at Christmas Holiday photos!
Merry Moose!

Our Greatest Gift!
As a holiday tradition, the students in the classes of Mrs. Jaruszewski & Mrs. Niccola wrote essays that focused on something special and memorable around the holidays. Instead of writing about material gifts, they shared their deepest gratitude for one of their “Greatest Gifts” in life. For example, students wrote about their family traditions, a special family trip, their families, a memorable gift that was passed down through generations, or even the simple gift of love and friendship. It was a nice way to show our families how grateful and reflective we are during these special times in life.
In the wonderful month of December, Mrs. Niccola's marvelous students were encouraged to dig deep into their minds and hearts to discover their greatest gifts. The students wrote, revised, and edited their essays until they were perfect to share with friends and families on December 18th. It was a great way to kick off the holiday season. A god time was had by all those who attended our presentation.
