The Wright Brothers

By: Madison Madden

Wilbur was born in 1867, and Orville was born in 1871. They had two brothers Reuchlin born in 1861 and Lorin born in 1862, and a younger sister Katharine born in 1874. Their mother was Susan Catherine (Koerner) Wright. Their father, Bishop Milton Wright, worked as a minister for various churches, and as a consequence of this the family moved frequently. As younger children Wilbur and Orville were encouraged to be more creative. Bishop brought Wilbur and Orville a small "helicopter" which sparked an interest for flight for them. As they got older they used money from the bicycle shop, which they had opened in 1892, to fund the plane they wanted to build. On December 17, 1903 the Wright Brothers made the first historic flight, Orville was the pilot, and Wilbur was running alongside the wing. In 1905 Wilbur and Orville built an airplane that could fly for more than half an hour at a time. Many other flights that made the plane go higher and for longer periods of time were conducted by Wilbur and Orville until their death, Wilbur died in 1912, and Orville died in 1948.
