Be the Best YOU at Grandview!!!
MLK Day....a day to remember and reflect
On Monday we don’t have school. We have a holiday that we call Martin Luther King Jr. Day. We have this holiday because Martin Luther King, Jr. is so, so important to so many people, that we want to remember him every year. He lived when your grandparents were little. When he was alive, lots of smart people were talking about how things weren’t fair—kids weren’t getting treated fairly because of the way they looked and the color of their skin, and their parents weren’t able to get certain jobs or vote because of the way they looked and the color of their skin. These people did a lot of hard work to change laws to make life more fair, and Martin Luther King Jr. is one of the people. Today we think about the work Martin Luther King and other people did to make the world more fair, and we think about what we can do to make things even better.
I hope you spend time today to reflect on what MLK did for Grandview. Grandview is a melting pot filled with lots of ethnicities present. Additionally, children do not see in color. Discrimination based on color is a learned behavior. Nothing breaks my heart more than when a child makes a comment to another student based on their skin. We are in the year 2019 and I cannot believe that children still think it is OK to use that vocabulary. Grandview's diversity is what makes Grandview special and unique.
This day off is a perfect day to open up the conversation with your children to have them think and reflect about how MLK made our lives better and Grandview better too. Have that conversation and let's continue to enhance the culture of Grandview.
Thank you for your continued support at home!
Your Proud Principal,
Melissa Carruth, Ed.S

WIDA
All students who have a language other than English spoken at home and are identified as English Learners must take a state test called WIDA ACCESS for ELLs (Accessing Comprehension and Communication in English State to State for English Language Learners). The Enrollment Office form that was completed when your son/daughter enrolled in Clarenceville Schools tells us this information. Students will take the test eve if they are not attending ESL/EL classes. The test is for Reading, Writing, Listening, Speaking and Comprehension in English. Students will take the test between February 4-March 22, 2019. We will mail your child's test results to you when we receive them from the Michigan Department of Education. If you have any questions, please contact Karen Morrison at 248-919-0404.

Tardy
We have had a lot of students arriving late. Tardies start at 8:40 and will be tracked. If your child comes in after the class did the lunch count, then they will automatically get PB&J as their lunch choice. Lunch counts will not be finalized until after 8:40. If you know your child is going to be late, then please call in the tardy and select your child's lunch choice to ensure that they can get another choice. Our lunch counts are becoming very lopsided and we need to ensure that the children are getting the choice that they signed up for. Also we need our students on time for school!!
Kroger and Grandview
We have collected $7.83 from August to October (we are newly established in Mid October so the collection is from half a month).
We have 21 families registered! Though I know we can have more!!! So please sign-up. Guidelines are below!!
Simply encourage your participants to visit http://www.kroger.com. Once logged into their Kroger account they can search for Friends of Grandview either by name or TH003 and then click Enroll. New users will need to create an account which requires some basic information, a valid email address and a rewards card.
*Customers must have a registered Kroger rewards card account to link to your organization.
*If a member does not yet have a Kroger rewards card, please let them know they are available at the customer service desk at any Kroger
REMEMBER, purchases will not count for your organization until after your participants register their rewards card.
Participants must swipe their registered Kroger rewards card or use the phone number that is related to their registered Kroger rewards card when shopping for each purchase to count.
Bookflix for Grandview Families
The Michigan eLibrary did not renew their subscription to Bookflix. We found great value in this site for our children. Therefore, Grandview purchased a school subscription that allows teachers and students to use the following username and password to access Bookflix at home and at school. Please feel free to use this at home. The link is as follows.....
https://digital.scholastic.com/site/launch/bkflix?ucn=600063987
There is a link on the Library symbaloo and will be putting a link under the student links on the Clarenceville website.
Username: grandvw
Password: flix
If you click on the apple and book in the top right corner, it takes you to a Resources and Tools page where you can search for books, search by themes, running times and grade levels.
This is another way to engage your students with their learning at home.
Enjoy!!!
Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts
Meetings are underway for both of these great organizations. Girl Scouts will be meeting on Wednesdays and Boy Scouts will be meeting on Mondays at 6:30. Come join the fun!
Transportation Changes
Do not rely on just the office for transportation changes. It is important that you also put it in writing in an email to the teacher. If you alert the teacher and the office, chances are better that the message is delivered accurately. We have so many transportation changes at the end of the day that makes us uneasy that a mistake could occur. Please do not make a change after 3:00!!
