Each step will be taught and practiced individually then built upon.
Just in time for Winter Break, the students will listen to some fun stories to help them get ready for this exciting time of year.
Writer's Workshop
In Handwriting, the students will focus on the formation and location of the lowercase f and q. Then, they will be introduced some of the features of a paragraph and practice writing. By copying a paragraph in their handwriting book, they will be able to focus on indenting the first line, and including details that support the main idea sentence.
After the students "wrap-up" their special project, we will begin our Poetry Unit. The students will learn that poetry is a form of communication that allows allows them to write and express themselves using a different language, tone, and word choice rather than nonfiction or narrative writing.
Math
The students learned basic multiplication and division concepts using manipulatives in first grade. In Chapter 5, the students will learn the pictorial and symbolic phases through the emphasis on equal groups. Students will use the strategy of repeated addition; 5 + 5 + 5 = 15. Division will be introduced as sharing a number of items among a number of groups. Using repeated subtraction will used to help the students visualize the process; 12 - 3 - 3 - 3 - 3 = 0.
