STEM Academy Family Newsletter

Week of February 28

Hello STEM Families and welcome to this week's newsletter. March has almost begun, and we continue to be very busy at STEM. Our Aviation Career Fair was a huge success last week, and we have another great event, the STEM Showcase coming up on Wednesday. Our Attendance Contest continues this week. The winning grade will be announced at Friday's Pep Rally for the Clippers who are playing for the District One Championship on Saturday at Temple.

ATTENDANCE

Attendance Contest

Our Attendance Contest continues this week, as we are emphasizing the importance of arriving to school on time every day. The grade with the highest percentage of ON TIME and PRESENT attendance during first period until Friday, March 4 will win a party for their grade on March 11.

7th and 8th Grade are currently in the lead, but both 9th and 10th are very close behind!

STEM EVENTS

Aviation Career Fair

Our Aviation Career Fair was a huge success last week. Each of our 10th, 11th, and 12th Grade students had the opportunity to meet professional Air Traffic Controllers and learn about the lucrative careers in their field. Additionally, students operated simulators that put them at the controls, and learned how to safely guide airplanes to their destination.

If you have a student in 10th, 11th, or 12th grade, make sure to ask them about the experience at the Aviation Career Fair.

At STEM, we believe this is the first step in connecting many of our students with careers in the Airlines. Aviation is a growing field that features many high paying careers, and we want to make sure our students are first in line to take advantage!

STEM Showcase and Awards Ceremony

Wednesday, March 2

5:30-7:30 PM

STEM Auditorium

The STEM Showcase and Awards Ceremony is an annual event at STEM to celebrate African American History Month. After being virtual last year, we are excited to bring the live event back this year. We will feature performances from talented STEM students, as well as recognize the achievements of our students.

Tickets will be required for this year's Showcase, however recordings will be available to those who cannot attend. All performers and awardees have been allotted two tickets to invite guests. Invitations were sent out on Friday. Others who are interested in attending should contact the STEM office about availability.

ACADEMIC UPDATES

Interim Reports

If you have not already, be sure to check Home Access Center, where you will see a Pass or Fail grade, plus comments for each of your student's classes. If students are struggling, they can turn it around, but they must act quickly.

Home Access Center (HAC) Sign-Up

The HAC is where you will find your student's report cards and interim reports. Not only that, visiting the HAC will allow you to check your student's grades and attendance on a daily basis.

If you do not have your HAC set up yet, email Ms. Misha Memon (mmemon@chesteruplandsd.org). She will reply with your username, password and a link to the log in page.

SUMMER STEM OPPORTUNITY

ID STEM - Increasing Diversity in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math

Dr. Thomas Butler from Crozer Health visited STEM on Wednesday, February 2. He met with 7th, 8th, and 9th grade students to speak about his experience becoming a doctor, and encourage them to participate in the ID STEM Summer Program at Crozer Hospital.

HEALTH AND SAFETY

Vaccination

Vaccination remains the best way to protect yourself and your family from serious cases of Covid. Additionally, the more students who become vaccinated, the more likely we are to stay in school without any returns to remote learning.

The vaccination numbers have been climbing here in Chester. Thank you to all who participated in the vaccination clinic events that were held in CUSD in January and February. Vaccines continue to be available and free at many locations in the city. Check out the Vaccination Calendar for more information!

Health and Safety Protocols

In addition to vaccination, it is important that everyone at STEM commit to following health and safety guidelines. Masks will continue to be required at all times while inside CUSD buildings. We recommend the use of N95/KN95 masks, or the combination of a surgical and cloth mask. The vast majority of our students have been compliant with masking policies throughout the year, and teachers will continue reviewing proper masking techniques. In order to maintain the safety of the entire school community and ensure continuity of in-person learning, a student who refuses to comply with our masking policy will be sent home from school.

Please make sure your student comes to school with a mask - N95/KN95 if possible. We will continue to supply masks to those who forget them, however we want to ensure we continue to have plenty of extra on hand.

If your student is feeling unwell or displaying symptoms of Covid, they must be kept home. You can contact our office by phone or email (yjones@chesteruplandsd.org ldixon@chesteruplandsd.org) to inform us of the absence.

ADMISSIONS 2022

Admissions Season is Coming...

As we approach Spring, we are planning to begin the admissions process for the next group of new STEM students. As with the past two years, our new student application will be found online beginning in early April. Please make sure your prospective 7th, 8th, and 9th grade students are checking the STEM Academy Home Page often for updates.

New student applicants will be evaluated based primarily on their report card grades from this year (2021-22). Other considerations include transcript history (for applicants already in high school), attendance, teacher recommendations, essay, and discipline. Make sure to remind prospective students to ensure their application is top-notch.

In the coming weeks, we will be visiting elementary schools to speak with students about the benefits of attending STEM Academy. If you have students at CCCS Aston, Widener Partnership, or Toby Farms, we will be coming to visit soon. We also hope to hold an in-person Prospective Student Night this Spring.

Finally, please be aware that current STEM 8th Graders must re-apply for admission into 9th Grade. Application requirements and criteria are the same as for students applying from other schools.
