Malcolm Berman particularly respects that a large part of being a Mason is giving back to your community through service projects and charitable donations.
Sandra & Malcolm Berman and the Arts
Malcolm Berman is more than just a real estate agent of 25 years. Through the foundation that he and his wife Sandra set up called the Sandra and Malcolm Berman Charitable Foundation, Inc., Malcolm Berman has been able to make a significant difference in the lives of the people of Baltimore. Sandra and Malcolm Berman have set up three medical institutes at local hospitals for research and treatment. These institutes cover the treatment of cancer patients and those with injuries to the brain and spine.
Besides these institutes, Sandra and Malcolm Berman have endowed the Modell Lyric Performing Arts Center with a $1 million pledge of support. This pledge is to be used for the Performing Arts Center's opera productions.
One of the most expensive of productions for a theater to perform, operas are often the first of the programs to be cut if a theater is struggling financially. Sandra and Malcolm Berman did not want to see the Modell Lyric Performing Arts Center have to also cut their program. The couple has long loved opera and appreciates having it in their hometown of Baltimore. So Sandra and Malcolm Berman have given this endowment to be used in the coming seasons for a grand opera each season.
Medical Institutes and Sandra & Malcolm Berman
When Sandra and Malcolm Berman gave money from their foundation, the Sandra and Malcolm Berman Charitable Foundation, Inc., for use in establishing three medical institutes in Baltimore area hospitals, they knew exactly what they were doing. Sandra and Malcolm Berman were giving the gift of hope and life to those who needed it most.
Two of these institutes are at the Greater Baltimore Medical Center and both were established for the research and treatment of cancer. The Sandra and Malcolm Berman Comprehensive Breast Center gives hope to women who are at risk of breast cancer or who are already struggling to handle the burden of a diagnosis of breast cancer. The Sandra and Malcolm Berman Cancer Institute also provides treatment, care and support to those diagnosed with various forms of cancer and is committed to healing and hope. Doctors, nurses, and researchers are constantly at work in these places of hope that Sandra and Malcolm Berman have built.
The last of the institutes is the Sandra and Malcolm Berman Brain and Spine Institute at Sinai Hospital, Baltimore. This institute is dedicated to the treatment of brain and spine injuries, as well as diseases that target the brain and nervous system.
It is with equal measures of pride and humility that Sandra and Malcolm Berman help these institutes flourish, attracting the brightest and best of doctors, full of the energy needed to address the needs of those that come to them. Sandra and Malcolm Berman watch as the institutes they built pass along a legacy of hope and life.
Malcolm Berman on the Importance of Medical Philanthropy
Malcolm Berman is a lucky man – he gets to spend his days dedicated to giving back to worthy causes. In particular, Malcolm Berman is invested in the importance of medical philanthropy. In the past three decades, Malcolm Berman has had multiple naming opportunities because of his generosity to the medical community. Centers bearing his name include the Sandra and Malcolm Berman Comprehensive Breast Care Center and the Sandra and Malcolm Berman Cancer Institute, both at Greater Baltimore Medical Center, and the Sandra and Malcolm Berman Brain and Spine Institute at Sinai Hospital and Northwest Hospital, also located in Baltimore, Maryland.
In Malcolm Berman’s view, healthcare is a human right that is too frequently denied. By focusing much of his philanthropy of medical institutions, Malcolm Berman hopes to correct that particular inequality. In particular, Malcolm Berman emphasizes the importance of philanthropy directed towards preventative care. It is in preventative care that lives are saved. The Sandra and Malcolm Berman Comprehensive Breast Care Center exemplifies great preventative care practices.
Another reason that Malcolm Berman believes the medical philanthropy is important is because governments have been cutting the funding for healthcare. In order to keep services available in many communities, those who have the funds to spare should direct them towards medical and health programs that provide wide reaching community outreach. These programs are frequently forced to reduce their hours or availability, or the number of staff available in order to stay within a shrinking budget, notes Malcolm Berman. If you have the resources to help, Malcolm Berman entreats you to give money to healthcare.
Malcolm Berman Supports the Greater Baltimore Medical Center
The Greater Baltimore Medical Center is a leading hospital serving the largest city in Maryland. Malcolm Berman is a major supporter of the work done by the Greater Baltimore Medical Center and has helped to keep the hospital on the cutting edge of new medical technologies and treatments. Through the Sandra and Malcolm Berman Charitable Foundation, Malcolm Berman has made significant contributions to the work of the Greater Baltimore Medical Center.
The funding provided by the Sandra and Malcolm Berman Charitable Foundation led to two naming opportunities for Malcolm Berman; both the Sandra and Malcolm Berman Comprehensive Breast Care Center and the Sandra and Malcolm Berman Cancer Institute bear his name. The Sandra and Malcolm Berman Cancer Institute was opened in 1990, and the Sandra and Malcolm Berman Comprehensive Breast Center was opened in 1996. The comprehensive breast center works not just with individuals with cancer, but with a range of conditions affecting the breasts.
Malcolm Berman is particularly invested in working with the cancer wing of the Greater Baltimore Medical Center because cancer is such a broad category of disease and it touches a wide variety of individuals from all parts of the community. In this same vein, Malcolm Berman supports the Greater Baltimore Medical Center because the hospital works hard to serve all corners of the community, including low-income patients. Philanthropic gifts like those given by Malcolm Berman’s foundation make this possible. Malcolm Berman believes that everyone with the financial resources to do so support greater access to healthcare through hospitals like the Greater Baltimore Medical Center.
Malcolm Berman Enjoys Being a Real Estate Broker
Malcolm Berman has been a real estate broker in Maryland for 25 years and has enjoyed this career immensely. Being a real estate broker has allowed Malcolm Berman to meet many different families and individuals in the community, including some of the most recent arrivals. Malcolm Berman likes helping families and individuals to select houses that they might like to look at, as well as helping families to negotiate the cost of their new home.
New residents are some of Malcolm Berman’s favorite clients to work with. Because Malcolm Berman is a prominent philanthropist and Maryland citizen, he is a popular real estate broker for individuals who are new to Maryland, and Malcolm Berman enjoys being one of the first faces to become familiar to newcomers.
One of the main reasons Malcolm Berman enjoys being a real estate broker is because he is a people person. Having a job that allows him to talk to people all day is a perfect fit for Malcolm Berman. Malcolm Berman forms real relationships with his clients, particularly because looking for a new home can be a long and emotional process, as people seek out the right fit and say goodbye to their old home.
Why Malcolm Berman Supports Brain and Spine Health
If you visit Sinai Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland, you will find there the Sandra and Malcolm Berman Brain and Spine Institute. This Institute, named based on a charitable donation from the Sandra and Malcolm Berman Charitable Foundation, is a 36-bed hospital unit for individuals receiving inpatient care or monitoring for brain or spine issues. Conditions treated at the Sandra and Malcolm Berman Brain and Spine Institute include epilepsy, strokes, and traumatic brain injury.
Malcolm Berman believes it is especially important to protect the health of the brain and spine. For most individuals, the ability to think clearly is tied up closely with notions of the self. Neurological conditions can threaten this self concept, an issue that Malcolm Berman would like to prevent for as many people as possible. Funding like that provided by Malcolm Berman helps hospital units like the Brain and Spine Institute to have the most state of the art technology, making them a top resource in treating conditions of the central nervous system.
Brain and spine injuries can be particularly debilitating, in ways that other illnesses might not be. This is because we are uniquely dependent on the functioning of the brain and spine – thought and movement are both tied up in this system. Malcolm Berman recognizes the difficulty that individuals with injuries to the brain or spine have with functioning in an inaccessible society. For Malcolm Berman, brain and spinal health are worthy of large donations because proper treatment can truly give individuals their lives back.
Why Malcolm Berman Believes in Supporting the Arts
Malcolm Berman is a prominent philanthropist, based in Maryland. As one half of the Sandra and Malcolm Berman Charitable Foundation, he has been involved in providing financial support to a range of causes. One of the causes Malcolm Berman believes is most important to support is the arts. In light of this, the Sandra and Malcolm Berman Charitable Foundation recently pledged $1 million to the Modell Lyric Performing Arts Center in Baltimore.
One reason Malcolm Berman supports the arts is to make them accessible to more people. The Modell Lyric Performing Arts Center, for example, houses a number of operas, alongside educational programming. In order to make these operas and other programming of that nature accessible to youths and low income individuals, outside funding is often necessary. This private funding is particularly important as schools and governments cut spending on the arts, notes Malcolm Berman.
Another reason to support the arts is that the arts encourage greater creativity in all areas of life. In our increasingly competitive economic situation, says Malcolm Berman, individuals who are creative are better positioned to take on innovative careers in growing market sectors. In fact, employers are ranking creativity as one of the most important traits for new hires.
Malcolm Berman also believes in supporting the arts because children who have arts education and exposure do better in school. Overall, having access to quality arts programming is predictive of higher child welfare and stronger communities. Being involved in the arts even predicts higher SAT scores.
