Heading into Winter Break and Towards Spring 2021!
As the year 2020 comes to a close and we prepare for a much needed Winter Break, the Civano Staff and I want to share how much we appreciate your support and collaboration this year!
Intellectually, we all have an understanding of the scope of the pandemic that has defined this entire year. Yet, the day-to-day living in it is unpredictable and frankly, much harder than most of us could imagine. We are encouraged by your presence and cooperation as we navigate this school year. We appreciate your understanding of health guidelines and your cooperation when there are symptoms at home.
As I write this, the COVID cases around our community continue to rise. The ADHS dashboard currently reflects each of the three metrics in the red or "substantial transmission" zone. The guidelines from the Pima County Health Department are that all three metrics are in the red zone for two consecutive weeks before a different instructional model is recommended. As a District, we know that our mitigation strategies -- wearing masks, using physical distancing, frequent hand-washing, cleaning and disinfecting, and quarantining when possibly exposed -- are very effective. Our District leaders continue to meet with the Pima County Health Department every week. The development of our COVID support team is a community model to help us to continue to remain open, support students, families, staff, and guide school leadership. That being said, it is important to be prepared with contingency plans for childcare if there are changes to the instructional model in the event of continued substantial spread.
Our children learn much from what they see and experience. It is my belief that they are seeing adults respectfully and productively work together to care for each other in the community and support student learning during this difficult time. We have seen a maturity in our students across all grade levels that comes from learning life lessons while being supported by caring families and teachers.
As we learn to roll and adapt to change, I do have to announce one big change for the next semester is that our middle school math teacher, Ms. Emily, and her family will be relocating to Georgia due to a change in her husband's military orders. Emily will be able to continue as the middle school math teacher, designing lessons and teaching virtually, while students on campus are supported in person by other staff. Please, help us wish the Chandlers the very best in their next chapter!
Finally, for now, a HUGE THANK YOU to Nicole Collins in the office, Jenn Hopek and her parents Chuck and Kim Voelker for their collaboration on Craft Day for our students! Our Lower School kids worked this past week on their crafts and Upper School will be crafting on Weds, Dec 16. Please be on the lookout for an email from Nicole if you are a Brick to Click Family interested in picking up a craft project next week.
There is much more to read about below. Please call or email if you have questions.
Warmly,
Lydia
Site Council Community Member Opening
The Site Council is an advisory council to school leadership regarding policy, school goals, educational enrichment plans and more. We meet once a month on Tuesdays from 2:30pm-3:30pm or so. We are meeting virtually at this time. If you might be interested in this appointment for the remainder of the year, please contact Lydia Crain at 879-1718 or crainl@vailschooldistrict.org.
Tax Credits
We are currently looking for a new art teacher on our Lower School campus. This is a part-time position and the position is posted on the District's website. If you know of someone who may be interested, please ask them to give Lydia a call at 879-1718 or email crainl@vailschooldistrict.org.
At Civano, we use tax credits to fund our art and music/drama classes. As the year comes to an end, please take advantage of public school tax credits. If you owe taxes to the state of Arizona, your contribution will offset what you owe dollar-for-dollar. If you give more than what you owe, you’ll get the extra back as a tax refund. It’s really an amazing opportunity! While none of us enjoy paying taxes, with tax credits you can know that at least some of your tax dollars go directly to benefit young people in our school!
Contribute online https://vailtaxcredits.org or via check in the school office.
Giving online? Please select “Greatest Need” at the bottom of the page and when directed to choose a school, select “Civano Community School”.
Public school tax credit gifts for the 2020 tax year may be made right up to April 15, 2021.
Couples filing jointly may take a credit of up to $400 and individuals up to $200.
Lottery Information Meetings & School Year 21-22(!)
Our families are our best referrals!
If you know of any families interested in Civano Community School for their child, please share our Lottery Information Meeting with them!
Current Families: If you wish for your child(ren) to remain at Civano, you do NOT need to attend a Lottery Information meeting. Please complete the intent form for next year to let us know of your plans. You can fill out the form HERE.
