5th Annual Book Swap
Holmes Elementary students are invited to participate in our annual book swap. This is a chance to load up on new books for summer reading. The book swap will take place Friday, June 1st from 9:00-10:00. Bring in your gently used books and trade them in for Book Bucks used to purchase "new to you" books to read!
Please see the attached PDF to learn how the book swap works!
PBIS Update
Being Safe
Work related to the construction of our school addition has begun. Please be cautious of the construction barriers and additional vehicles that are present. Remind your students to never enter the construction zone, or to attempt to go beyond the safety fencing.
PBIS Hawk Academy (Check-In, Check-Out)
We’re very proud of our students, who are experiencing great success through their participation in Hawk Academy. Our team plans to continue and increase student participation in the Hawk Academy in the next school year.
What’s in a Name?
The Holmes Expansion Project has stirred much excitement amongst our students.
This project presents an opportunity to rename the expanded multipurpose room and the expanded library/media center. Our team values student voice and has asked students to share creative new names for these enhanced spaces. Ask your students about the ideas they’ve shared.
Hawk Nest
Hawks Nest
Students met with their Hawks Nest group on Wednesday, May 2nd. Students participated in a lesson that focuses on “paying it forward” and making a plan for random acts of kindness.
Students also worked on an exciting school-wide art project. There will be a permanent art installation on an exposed steel beam in the newly created STEAM lab. Here is a sneak peak of some of the tiles that will be incorporated into the artwork.
Celebrate Holmes Staff
Families, have you noticed a Holmes teacher or staff member who deserves a compliment or a thank you? Has this person made a difference for your child? Please share the reason in a brief email to me (czelaya@op97.org) so that we may recognize and thank them!
A FEW NOTES FROM YOUR PTO…
Our final community meeting of the school year is next Wednesday, May 9th at 6:30pm. The agenda is attached. It will be jam packed meeting. We'll get an update on the Hawks Nest program and it’s positive impact on student outcomes from Dr. Zelaya, thank and recognize our exiting board members and celebrate our volunteers, introduce and vote in the new board members, approve next year’s budget, and discuss our Journey to Partnership and where we’ve come. Invite an incoming family, a neighbor, or another parent who you know will be interested! Open to all families, yummy niblings and free childcare is provided. Hope to see you there!
Volunteer to do a demo at STEM Week, where each class brings in a special guest to highlight and make accessible STEM related fields and concepts. We're looking for members of the Holmes community to translate their job (or hobby!) to the next generation of tinkerers, builders, and budding scientists. Presentations typically total 30 minutes and offer a brief overview of a topic, a quick hands-on demonstration, and (of course) answering some questions!
Can't do a full presentation during the week? No worries - we're also looking for STEM Night volunteers to help with supporting presenters, sheparding students, and generally making STEM Night a success.
