Deer Hill School News . May 27 2022
Dear Deer Hill Families,
While our heads and hearts are still firmly in this school year, planning is well underway for next. During today's early release time, grade level teams and specialists will continue the work of class placement. At its last meeting of the year, the Deer Hill School Council reviewed data from our Family School Relationship Survey and used it to develop our 2022-23 School Improvement Plan. On June 8, I'll present the "glows and grows" of that survey, the new SIP, and an updated handbook at the School Committee meeting.
Alongside all of that planning, our last few weeks have been spent gauging student progress through MCAS (now finished!) and iReady (still going!). Additionally, teachers will complete a final round of reading and writing assessments as well as continue with the Bridges math curriculum.
Mixed in with continued hard work are many special activities such as assemblies, field trips, and traditions old (5th grade egg drop) and new (the 2nd annual staff vs. 5th grade kickball game). So much is happening that our Deer Hill Dates section seems to have gotten longer, not shorter, since our last newsletter. Be sure to give it a second glance as you head into what I hope is a sunny and relaxing Memorial Day weekend!
All the best,
Alexandra L. Sullivan
Principal, Deer Hill School
P.S. Our next newsletter will be published on June 10, 2022.

Need to Knows
- Band and chorus members: Due to a conflict with Senior Class Night at CHS, our Outdoor Spring Band and Chorus Concert has been moved to Wednesday, June 1 at 6:30. If there is rain, we will move to the gym. My apologies for this calendar change. Band and chorus families will receive emails from Mr. DeWaal and Mrs. Lewis with additional details.
- Let's hear it for the yogis! On June 27 at 9:45, we will conclude this year's yoga program with our first Deer Hill Outdoor Yoga Flow. Led by our amazing yoga instructor, Marina Gustafson, all students will take to the field to complete a yoga flow. Feel free to bring a beach towel and join in for this zen experience!
- The Deer Hill Changemakers, one of our enrichment groups, were instrumental in our End Hunger NE campaign. As their final project, they would love your help in supporting the Scituate Animal Shelter. Please see the flyer below.
- The spring CEF grant cycle funded several new projects at Deer Hill from a modernized classroom space, to an upgraded STEAM lab, to professional development that helps teachers integrate STEAM tools across the curriculum. I look forward to sharing more news of these opportunities as they unfold. Thank you, CEF!
Keeping the Joy (happenings at Deer Hill)
- Reading Rovers and yoga were never more important than in this past week. Add to that art, science, reading lessons, technology, and higher order math instruction, and it's clear that Deer Hill is still at full speed as we head into the final month of school.
- Two field trips have taken place since our last newsletter. On May 16, the 5th grade walked the Freedom trail, and on May 20, the 3rd grade visited the Plimoth Patuxet Museum. 4th grade has its turn with a trip to the Franklin Park Zoo, on June 14.
- Deer Hill was so pleased to be a small part of the 103rd birthday of Lillian Etkind, a Cohasset resident. Thank you to the students who made sure that she had 103 cards to help her celebrate her birthday. The Patriot Ledger published a lovely article about this small act of kindness that brought a smile to both Lillian and her family.
- Thanks to a PSO grant submitted by Ms. O'Hara and Mrs. Garretson, 4th graders have an opportunity to enjoy crafts during recesses one a week. This has been a huge success that can hopefully be expanded to other grade levels in the future.
