Alan Turning was an English mathematician and code breaker. when WWII started, he worked at breaking the German codes. he thought that code breaking would be a lot easier if a machine could do it instead of people. Some people thought this idea was crazy and they didn't want machines to be cleverer than them.
In 1936 he went to Princeton university in America, and returning to England in 1938. he began to work secretly part-time for the British cryptanalytic department , the Government Code and Cypher School. He then, when the war began he worked for the British army cracking codes.
