The “Amber Waves of Grain” from the song “America the Beautiful” could easily describe the golden wheat covering much of North Dakota’s land. In the east,the state is completely flat great for farming. In the middle North Dakota there are hills and mountains that are wonderful for hiking. Much of the west is covered with canyons. The eastern third of North Dakota was shaped by Lake Agassiz, a giant body of water that came from a glacier. The fertile soil of the Red River Valley and sandy soil of the Drift Prairie help put agriculture at the top of North Dakota’s economy. Other riches come from North Dakota’s land in the form of coal, oil, and natural gas. If you like macaroni and cheese, there’s a good chance that the wheat used to make the macaroni pasta came from North Dakota!
Culture and Interesting Facts
North Dakota’s culture is very unique. To celebrate, they sing, dance, and join in traditional storytelling. The Sioux, Ojibwa, Arikara, Hidatsa, and Mandan have maintained many of the cultural traditions, such as dancing. In the 1700s, several groups of Native American’s lived on the northern plains, including a group which called itself Dakota, which means”friend”. Native Americans were the first to come to North Dakota. North Dakota has a lot of fun facts. The capital of North Dakota is Bismarck. “Liberty and Union, Now and Forever, One and Inseparable” is the motto of the very green North Dakota. North Dakota’s state bird is a Western Meadowlark, a beautiful yellow bird which sings in the morning to the night. Also North Dakota’s state flower is the Wild Prairie Rose, a light pink and white flower gracefully blooming in the spring and summer. The richerson ground squirrel is the unofficial state animal, but you can see it popping out during any season. Get ready because here comes North Dakota!
