Welcome to the Colony of Virginia!
Virginia is Love, Virginia is Life!
Important Beliefs
In Virginia, we believe in letting anyone practice whatever religion they want. There is not a single religion that people must follow. The most popular religions that people follow in Virginia are Anglican, Jewish, and Baptist.
Our Awesome Exports
Cotton
Cotton is mainly grown in plantations is a main source of money. It is produced in mass amounts due to slaves.
Tobacco
Tobacco saved the colony of Jamestown in 1612. It sold for a lot of money and was popular even though the King of England did not approve of it. Eventually, we exported 30,000 pounds of tobacco a year!
Furs and Skins
Furs and skins is an important part of our exports. Not only does it help us have food and business, but it also keep us in good terms with the Indians, who help us.
Government
We created the first legislative assembly in the colonies. The Virginia House of Burgesses was first used a tool to make more people move to Virginia. It was a group of male settlers who met with the governor to make laws and decisions for the colony. This was the first example of representative government in the colonies and led to the belief that people should have a say in the government. Through our example, the other colonies followed us.
Climate and Landscape
The climate in Virginia was very warm, which meant less harsh winters. It also meant that crops could be grown year round. Virginia's landscape mainly consisted of valleys, mountains, coastal plains and other forms of breath-taking scenery. Because Virginia is very mountainous and river filled, the landscape helped boost the tobacco economy since the rivers made the soil fertile.
A Typical Plantation
The Slave Trade
A plantation that was owned by an aristocrat or a wealthy person used slaves to do manual labor. This gave the European families lots of money at little or no cost. A wealthy family had plenty of slaves with some even having more than a 100.
Parts of a Plantation
A typical plantation was massive and included the main house, slave quarters, blacksmith's shop, dairy shops, smokehouse, and barns. With many shops and slaves a plantation was usually self-sufficient.
Types of Plantations
There many types of plantations each different based on the main cash crop each owner wishes to produce. For example, there are cotton, tobacco, rice, indigo, and sugar plantations.
