Good vs Evil

Peyton Bowles and Chelsea Meyer

Essential question:

Does the good person always prevail?

- In our society it is known that the good person usually wins in the end. The person usually prevails even if they have to experience some trials.

Quote

“People couldn't become truly holy, he said, unless they also had the opportunity to be definitively wicked.”

Terry Pratchett Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch

-All people can choose if they want to be good or bad. The choice is all up to them, and they choose their path. Just as in Beowulf, Grendel could have been good if he wanted to be. But instead of being good he chose to be wicked. This chose made his life end and the good person prevail. In the beginning of his choice would have been different, his life could have ended differently.

Newscast

In the newscast, the man did what he knew was right even when the wrong could have helped him tremendously. The news of him doing to the right thing spread and still left him with a reward. This is relevant because this man is homeless and could have taken the ring and got money for it. However, he gave it back knowing he had little to no money. Him doing this rewarded him in more than the ring could of got him. In this story everybody wins.

Speech

Good vs Evil Speech

"These are dark times in which we live, so as much as we must fight on with light, love and life in our hearts. Only by doing so can we free the world of evil, or at least lessen the lashings of the devil. It's not in human nature, but we all are capable of good, while we are also capable of great evil. But the point is ladies and gentleman, peace, is a just cause worth fighting for." -LoneVVolf989

-In Beowulf, Grendel is the antagonist and Beowulf is the protagonist. In the story of Beowulf, Beowulf could have easily been evil and done bad things. However, he chooses to lessen the evil in the world by killing Grendel. The story portrays vivid images of who is capable of great evil and who is capable of good.

Poem

Good vs Evil

Good and evil Poem
What is that you seek?
Despite us being humble and meek
We have all been on the borderline
Between good and evil.
Every so often jumping back and forth
Like a skipping rope, deciding the fate we choose
Then quickly changing our minds
Simply because of the convenience
We soon realize that we bind ourselves
Together by the actions we take,
Every action we make
Marks off a consequence
Whether it’s good or evil
Because one day we will stay on one side
And watch the other
With contentment or with jealousy
At that moment is when you realize what side you belong to
Forever

-The poem tells a story that every action has a consequence, good or bad. This is relevant for both Grendel and Beowulf. Grendel is a monster and does bad things; he dies. Beowulf is a hero and does good things; he dies. This poem questions the idea if the good person always wins or not. By the end of Beowulf, both the protagonist and antagonist die. It also portrays the idea that your actions lead you to one side forever. Whether it be good or bad, you will always be on one side.

Good and Bad short story

There lived a villager. He made his living by selling seeds in the market. He had ten bags with him, which he would carry to another village to buy the seeds. Of the ten bags, one was different from the rest. It had many holes and was torn at a few places. But, despite its poor condition, the villager would carry it regularly together with all other bags to get the seeds from another village. One fine day, the torn bag started thinking, “I am but a torn bag. I have so many holes. I don’t understand why my master takes me along for bringing seeds. Why doesn’t he throw me out?” He decided to ask the villager.“ O my master, why don’t you just throw me away? You know I am no use. I don’t serve you honestly. I spill all the seeds you fill in me, all along the way. By the time you reach home I have no seeds left to offer you. Please, may I know why you don’t do away with me?” asked the bag. The villager patiently listened to the torn bag. Then, he smiled and said, “My dear bag, who told you that you are bad? You don’t know how good you are! Come, I will tell you what good you have done to me, and to others as well.” So saying, the villager took the torn bag into his arms and took it outside to show it something. The villager then said, “Do you see all these trees? These trees are there all along the way from this village to the next, from where I buy seeds. These trees have grown from the seeds you have been spilling along the way for so many years.” The villager then paused for a second and continued, “These trees give a cool shade to the tired passers-by on hot sunny days. They also give oxygen to living beings and fruits to birds, animals and humans. Can’t you see of what great service you have been to the world?! ”The torn bag was happy to learn all this. It had realized that everyone everywhere had something good to offer the world!

-In Beowulf, when he showed up saying he was going to kill Grendel nobody had faith in him. However, when he actually did it people praised him. Sometimes the person you have no faith in is the one who will make the difference. Just like in the story, you may never know what they are going to do for you.

Video clip

This Nike commercial back in the early 2000's does a good job at portraying how people always want the good guys to win. They show the bad guys and how hard it would be to defeat them and the diversity they would go to. Then they showed how the good guys beat them. Same as in Beowulf, they show how big and bad the antagonist is and then the protagonist really comes in and defeats them.

Jay Z, Hugh Jackman and Katie Holmes Hope to End Poverty with Global Citizen Festival

The concert, which is free for ticketed guests, will take place on the Great Lawn in Central Park on Saturday, Sept. 27. And for the first time ever, it will also be broadcast on TV: NBC will air a one-hour prime-time special at 9 p.m. ET, and MSNBC will air and stream the full concert on cable and on msnbc.com, respectively. "I believe through actions, whether it be by raising awareness, getting involved or educating ourselves, the goal to end extreme poverty by 2030 is possible," says Jay Z, who is set to perform.

Because the Global Citizen movement works to eradicate extreme poverty worldwide, in order to get a ticket, festival attendees must participate in online "actions" at globalcitizenfestival.com to become eligible for a lottery draw. Those "actions" include signing a petition calling on world leaders to fund life-saving vaccines to children in poor countries. "I am thrilled to be a part of this year's Global Citizen Festival to further the movement to end extreme poverty," Jackman says. "This is a cause that has been close to my heart for many years, and I look forward to joining 60,000 Global Citizens in Central Park as we change the world for the better.”

Since the festival's inception three years ago, the campaign has raised more than $1.3 billion in new funding and resulted in 35 commitments from world leaders that directly benefit the world's poor.

-The people in this article are famous people who have worked hard for their money. They could be going out and spending their time and money on them; however, they are taking time to help other who need help. They personally don't need help, but they are helping others. They are using their goodness to help people in bad situations. Sometimes the good helps the bad prevail, even if the "bad" are not necessarily bad people.
