CRHS Biomed & Engineering Program Partners Visit Shows Learning in Action
David Dimmett, President and Chief Executive Officer and other executives from Project Lead the Way (PLTW), as well as local industry leaders visited Coon Rapids High School (CRHS) - Center for Biomedical Sciences and Engineering Nov. 10 for a glimpse of the curriculum in action.
PLTW creates engaging classroom environments by empowering students to develop and apply in-demand, transportable skills by exploring real-world challenges. Through pathways in computer science, engineering, and biomedical science, students not only learn technical skills, but also learn to solve problems, think critically and creatively, communicate, and collaborate. PLTW also provides teachers with the training, resources, and support they need to engage students in real-world learning.
The Nov. 10 visit also included visitors from neighboring school districts, including educators from Osseo Area Schools, Minneapolis, and St. Paul Public Schools, and industry partners Cargill and Medtronic. View photos from the CRHS Biomed & Engineering visit on Nov. 10.
CRHS students and staff provided an in-depth look at the biomedical sciences and engineering programs and how they are using PLTW curriculum on a daily basis. Guests toured the building, visiting computer integrated manufacturing, medical interventions, biomedical innovation, and engineering design and development classes to see the PLTW in action and hear from students as they showed off their latest classroom projects.
PLTW curriculum is currently provided in nine schools across the district, including CRHS, Blaine High School - Center for Engineering, Mathematics and Science, Anoka, Coon Rapids, Jackson, Northdale, Oak View, and Roosevelt middle schools and Monroe Elementary School - Mathematics, Science and Children’s Engineering.

CRHS Students Participate in Respect Retreat
Last week, all CRHS freshmen students participated in a Youth Frontiers Respect Retreat thanks to a long-standing partnership with the Coon Rapids Rotary Club. Students took part in community-building games with classmates, heard from speakers about the importance of being a leader in and outside of school, and were able to reflect deeply with their peers in small groups. Students from the CRHS Link Crew leadership group helped lead activities and small group discussions. On Monday, a few students visited the Coon Rapids Rotary Club to share about their experiences and to thank the group for their continued sponsorship of this awesome retreat. Coon Rapids High School is proud of this tradition and is so appreciative of the support from the Rotary Club to be able to build connections and community in the Fall with our newest Cardinals!

AVID Seniors Speak at Staff Meeting
Over the past few years, CRHS has worked hard to amplify student voice and engage students in committee and staff meetings in an effort to better understand the student perspective and gather feedback on a variety of areas in the school. At our last Staff Meeting, students in the CRHS AVID Program shared with staff how the program has helped and was a tremendous opportunity for staff to hear about the impact AVID has had on their time at CRHS and beyond!
AVID Seniors Eliana Munson, Ephraim Cooper, and Erik Anda addressed the entire CRHS staff at the monthly meeting last Tuesday. The students shared their motivation for joining and staying a part of the AVID program during their high school careers. Love of community, personal growth, and development of soft skills were just a few of the benefits they named.
Erik shared that he took a year off from AVID but then put in the effort to re-join the program - staff noted they were impressed with his authenticity and his motivation. Eliana talked about how the AVID program shifted her view of teachers and helped her learn that they could be mentors, which reflects on her maturity and on the ability of CRHS staff to make connections with their students. Ephraim emphasized the importance of community that their group has developed.
Staff offered many compliments of the students, saying they were delightful, refreshing, articulate, and “excellent representatives of both the program and the school.” One staff member reflected that they helped her understand how the school runs from the student perspective, saying: “I wish we had more student voice at our Staff Meetings.”

Senior "Ads for Grads" for the 2022-2023 Yearbook
Senior Parents-
Senior Year is an important milestone in many student's lives and it’s important to find creative ways to commemorate your student’s senior year, celebrate all of their hard work and accomplishments throughout their school career, and let them know that you love and are proud of them. A fun and easy way to do this is to place a recognition ad, or an “Ad for Grads”, in the 2022-2023 Yearbook. This is something that your student can look back on for years to come.
It is very simple to create an “Ad for Grad.” Just visit www.jostensadservice.com and you can begin creating your ad today using your favorite photos of your son or daughter and a personal message. You can choose any photos you like: a baby photo, a grade school photo, or just a photo of your student that you love--you can even take a picture of the photo you want to use and upload that image from your phone.
- Photos may be in color or black and white, and you pick the fonts and background.
- Ads are available in two different sizes, 1/4 page for $60 or 1/8 page for $40.
- The Ads for Grads deadline is January 13, 2023.
If you have any questions or need tips on how to upload the pictures you want to use, please email Kari Berg at karilee.berg@ahschools.us or check out this sheet from Jostens with FAQs.
