Barton Junior High School

February 2023
The first half of the 22-23 school year has flown by, and so many great things have taken place at Barton Jr High! We had well over 300 students increase their STAR scores from the beginning of the year to the middle of the year in reading and/or math! This is more than half of our students. We celebrated by providing ice cream sandwiches to our students increasing their score by 50 or more points! More exciting things are to come as students continue to learn and grow! I am one proud principal!
We have successfully implemented our detection systems at our entrances each morning. Our staff have worked hard to ensure that our campus is as safe as it can be for all of our students and staff. I appreciate our students and parents for their patience. Students have done a great job learning which of their items will set off the system and they have gotten faster and faster at going through the system. We are now able to get the students cleared through the front entrance by 7:55.
Please continue dropping your student off at the FRONT doors of the school when arriving at 7:45 or after. At this point we also need PARENTS to HELP with the traffic. If you will ONLY DROP OFF on the school side sidewalk, that will keep students safe. We have people trying to make the street in front of Barton a 3 lane road and zipping in and out while students are being let out across the street from the building and trying to cross the street. Our number one priority is to keep our students safe! Your help with only dropping your child off near the sidewalk will keep students safe AND help the traffic move more quickly. Also, if you can pull down through the crosswalk and use the length of the sidewalk, that will keep traffic flowing and allow more students to get out of vehicles at one time. As always, everyone working together will make this process much easier!
Thank you for your support of Barton while we continue to make it a safer place for our students!
Career Development Explores Jobs Virtually
CTE was awarded a grant for virtual reality headsets to help guide students into the exploration of careers. The headsets will be at Barton in the Career Development classrooms for 2 weeks.
These VR headsets have preloaded software that let students perform a number of virtual jobs. The first day in class, each student was able to be in an oil changing booth and change the oil in a car. There are several jobs from different career fields which give students some exposure to different careers. The students are enjoying being able to explore different types of jobs through this virtual reality experience.

We are so proud of Jill Humphreys! She is Barton’s Tech Hero for the month of January. We are so thankful for all Jill does at BJH for our students and teachers.
Barton Teachers Learning Together
Professional Development
Teachers learn together different strategies for culture and relationship building to use with students to increase community and engagement within the classrooms. Solution Tree representative Alex McNeece had teachers play "games" that encourage students to engage with both learning material and building a positive classroom environment.
