Resetting Expectations for Scholar Safety
In an effort to reset expectations based on safety concerns that have come to forefront in the last couple of weeks, we are reiterating these expectations for the environment at HAMS. It is our responsibility to ensure that ALL students feel safe when coming to school. These procedures and expectations will help us improve safety while scholars are here at school so they have an optimal learning environment.
Please discuss these expectations with your scholars and work with us to support the safety of our school! We sincerely appreciate your partnership with us.
Report Directly to Advisory Period
- Scholars should be reporting directly to Advisory period. Scholars should not roam around school in unassigned areas.
- Scholars are getting grab and go breakfast (6th/8th from the cafeteria; 5th/7th from the breakfast cart), and then directly to Advisory period.
Tardies to Class
- Scholars are expected to be in class on time.
- We are implementing a building wide tardy policy. The first three tardies are free. All scholars begin with a clean slate on November 8th.
- Scholars will be assigned a assigned lunch detention (30 minutes) for their fourth tardy to class.
- Scholars will receive a referral to the office for the fifth tardy to class.
- Additional tardies will be result in further discipline.
Hall Passes Required
- Scholars will not be allowed to leave class during the first 10 minutes of class or the last 10 minutes of class.
- Scholars should NOT be in the hallways without a written pass from their teacher.
- Scholars who are in the hallway without a pass are subject to discipline.
Insubordination
Increased Discipline for Fighting
Students who engage in fighting of any kind on school property may be subject to a 10 day out of school suspension with the possibility of a recommendation for expulsion.
Masks and Water Bottles
Masks: Please help us keep your child and others healthy by encouraging them to bring a mask to school and to wear their mask over their nose and mouth while inside the building and on the bus. We are seeing an increase in scholars who are refusing to wear their masks or are not wearing their masks properly. Scholars who continue to break this school/District rule may receive disciplinary consequences.
Water Bottles: Due to Covid restrictions, HAMS does not have water fountains. Instead, we have bottle fillers. Please send a water bottle to school to help your child hydrate through out the day. (This is especially important for scholars who have physical courses such as PE, Fitness, and Yoga).

If you want to recognized a HAMS staff member, please complete the link below. So far, our recognized staff has been Ashley Pittman (Social Worker) and Erin Betsko (Art Teacher).
Grade 5
5th grade Families,
Please send masks, pencils and a water bottle with your student everyday. We are seeing students go through several disposable masks each day and it is putting a strain on our resources.
The weather has started to become cold and we are seeing some students without coats. Please be aware that we will take the students outside for recess unless it is raining or under 30 degrees. We want to make sure students are prepared to go outside.
Grade 6
Math(Griffin)- This week, we have been working on understanding and applying the terms prime, composite, factors, and multiples. Scholars will finish stations this week and will be moving on to Greatest Common Factor (GCF) and Least Common Multiple (LCM). Scholars will continue work on ALEKS Quicktables, ALEKS lessons (7 topics per week), along with assignments on ECHO. Please be sure to check grades and monitor missing assignments.
Math (Babb)- All math students have been working diligently to improve their math skills through their Aleks lessons. Students should be completing at least 7 topics a week. Enriched and Math 6: We are finishing up our study of real world ratios and rates. Students are working to determine the better buy of products. We will be revisiting percentages and then moving into our study of Equations and Algebra.
Science (Babb)- Scholars are continuing their study of Rocks and Minerals.
Humanities- This week scholars have been learning to annotate informational texts about paleolithic and neolithic life. They then used the annotated text to answer comprehension questions and write short extended response answers. Next week scholars will begin their exploration of the first of our Ancient River Valley Civilizations, Mesopotamia, by learning what makes a place a civilization. They will also discover how the geography of Mesopotamia encouraged nomadic people to create permanent settlements.
Science (Miller)- We are continuing working on properties of kinetic and potential energy. Students are doing different experiments both virtual and real-life. We are also reviewing speed and doing a variety of different formulas. Please make sure your student stays caught up on assignments and monitor your echo on a daily basis.
PBL- Scholars have been working in groups to help solve some problems that citizens are facing in Reynoldsburg. Groups are coming up with ways to help the community with things like substance abuse, cyber bullying, suicide, homelessness, mental health, and domestic violence.
Grade 7
In ELA with Ms. Lawrence, scholars will be reading the Greek myth The Flight of Icarus. Students will be analyzing the themes within this short story. Students can access this story at home, through the student portal, on the HMH Ed site.
In Science with Ms. Rogers, students will be working on learning how to use the Periodic Table of Elements. All students have been assigned their own element and will be responsible for making an Element Diagram that has that element's atomic number, atomic symbol, and explanation of its uses. Once projects are done, we will put together all student element diagrams to make a massive Periodic Table that will be hung up in the 7th grade hallway. Please, remind students to finish their homework. Homework is always assigned on Monday's and due Friday.
In Social Studies with Mr. Perkins, this quarter has been all about Rome so far. We have learned about the geography of Italy, the Punic Wars, and how the Roman Republic is the basis of our government today in America. We had our first assessment of the quarter: a quiz about how the Roman Republic worked. So make sure you are talking to your student about quiz corrections if they need to earn more points on their quiz. This week the focus is "What was it like to actually live in Rome?" We are doing a series of activities to gain an understanding of Roman culture. We are looking at everything from gladiators, their religion, their fashion, architecture, expansion, and we will be taking a virtual tour of the city. Next week we will be performing a CSI investigation of a murder that happened in ithe Senate: The death of Julius Caesar.
In math for the next few weeks with Ms. Fox, we will be focusing on the order of operations by following PEMDAS. We are also starting to simplify expressions and solve equations for the missing variable. Students should be completing 7 ALEKS lessons a week from Monday-Sunday for homework; this is our online program used to help students grow in math. Please feel free to reach out through text at 614-710-4840 with any questions or concerns.
The seventh grade enriched math class with Ms. Lewis has begun delving into Statistics & Probability. Terms introduced include population & sample, and variability. Through analyzing the mean, median, and spread of sets of data, students are gaining experience in making inferences and predictions. Most of the class’s practice will be coming through Reveal Math. Not only do we have an e-book that can be found through Reveal in the HAMS student portal, but we also have access to a textbook/workbook. Please encourage your child to spend time outside of class on assignments and ALEKS.
Reminders:
Please make sure your scholar arrives at school with a charged chromebook or device. We are seeing an increase of students showing up without a computer or with a dead computer. This causes disruption to learning.
We are seeing an increase in missing work among scholars. Please continue to look at ECHO for grades and missing assignments for your scholar. Scores that appear in red in Echo are failing scores and need to be reworked and resubmitted. Scores that appear green in Echo are passing scores.
Please send your scholar to school with a water bottle. Covid prevents us from using drinking fountains, unless using a water bottle.
Thank you for sharing your student with us!
Your 7th Grade Team
Grade 8
In math class this week students were working on a group project on scientific notation. Our quiz on this topic is Friday Nov 5th. We will start with EQUATIONS next week. This is a huge topic in 8th grade, and will help them a lot in high school.
Int 1:
Integrated Math 1 students are deep into finding equations of a line via the Slope-Intercept Form and/or The Point-Slope Form. We are using Desomos.com to graph equations, find the line of best fit, and make inferences or predictions relative to future data pieces. Each student is learning perseverance as we navigate new and challenging material. Most of the class’s practice comes through Reveal Math. Not only do we have an e-book that can be found through Reveal in the HAMS student portal, students also have access to a textbook while at school. Please encourage your child to spend time outside of class on assignments and ALEKS.
Social Studies:
This week we have started our new unit on the U.S. Constitution. Students will learn about fundamental parts of our government including Checks and Balances, Federalism, and Separation of Powers. Students have started working on a project where they will create their own constitution.
Science:
In Science 8, we are finishing up our Motion Unit! The opportunity for a Retake test will be on Tuesday Nov 9. If your student has a grade below 80% on the test, please have them use the study tools on Echo with the "green apple" to review for a better grade. We are moving into our Earth Science Unit and will be starting with Earth's Interior. Your student will soon get an assignment in which they will have to do a small project AT HOME. More to come
ELA:

Masks
grade students, teachers and staff will be required to wear a mask indoors during the school day to help to decrease the transmission of the COVID-19 virus and its variants, regardless of vaccination status. Masks are also required for everyone who is unvaccinated.
All students are required to wear masks at all times while using public transportation, including school buses. This is mandated per the CDC and the Transportation Security Administration (TSA)’s Security Directive SD 1582/84-21-01. This directive includes students using school transportation for sporting events or extracurricular activities."
We are seeing an increase in Covid cases among our scholars. We are committed to the health and safety of our scholars, staff and visitors to our building, and we need your help!! Many of our scholars are not reporting to school with masks and/or are not wearing them properly. Scholars are wearing masks below their faces, not covering their noses or are not wearing them at all. Please take time at home to talk with your child about the importance of wearing their masks while in the building and on our school buses and providing your child with a mask to wear when they report to school.
We appreciate your assistance in helping to keep our school community healthy!!
