English Express

Volume 4

Why should you read Lovely, Dark, and Deep?

It is a moving story of a teenage girl who, on the brink of graduating from high school and heading into her "real life," is in a tragic car accident that kills her boyfriend. The story begins just as she has moved away from her New York home with her mom to her artist dad's home in the woods of Rhode Island. The novel is touching and sad and raw and hopeful, a story for anyone who has experienced grief and loss.

Learners had the option to attend a Google Hangout with Sarah Palmer, the rescue team manager from the global organization Liberty in North Korea (LiNK) this six weeks to further our understanding of the premise of power and persuasion in Animal Farm. It was a wonderful experience!

Special shout-out to senior Becky C. (pictured left) who is the president of LiNK CHS and acted as our discussion moderator!

Check out my blog post and read the tweets of the event here.

Rockstar Writers

A timed essay is definitely tough, but our learners rose to the challenge. Check out some of the awesome writing samples from the Animal Farm Timed Essay. Rock on, writers!

What's Next?

We will be reading Lord of the Flies by William Golding in the 3rd six weeks. Learners must acquire the book by Monday, 11/16. They can read the physical book or an eBook, depending on their preference. There is a free online text here.

I also encourage the learners to check out the Book Xchange shelf in our school library to see if they might obtain a copy there.

Learners should read through chapter 6 by the time we come back from Fall Break.

Total Registration Is Now Open!

Total Registration, the website we use to register students for AP exams, is open and can begin processing AP exam orders. TR allows for partial payments for the exams so payments can be spread out over several months rather than all money due at one time.

Exams will be $92 each.

The link is also found on the Advanced Placement page under the Counseling tab on the CHS home page. There is a quick link for CHS AP Exam Registration on the right side of the page.

Want to Contribute to Our Classroom Library?

If you would like to continue helping build our library, you are welcome to donate books that you no longer wish to keep at your home. We are looking only for books that our learners desire to read. Just send any books to school with your learner, and your family's donation will be remembered inside the book cover.
