Attendance Encouragement
Attending school has a huge impact on student success. This year we want to make sure every student misses no more than 9 days of school, or 1 day a month. We need your help.
Some Attendance Tips to Promote Student Learning:
- Make sure your students keep a regular bedtime and establish a morning routine so they are rested and alert when they get to school.
- Turn off all electronics including TVs, phones and tablets at bedtime.
- Make sure clothes and pack backpacks are ready the night before.
- Check with our school nurse or office staff if you are not sure about when to keep your child at home due to illness.
- Avoid scheduling vacations or doctor’s appointments when school is in session.
- Talk to teachers and counselors for advice if your student feel anxious about going to school.
- Develop back up plans for getting to school if something comes up. Call on a family member, neighbor, or another parent to take your student to school.
Please let us know how we can best support you and your student so that they can show up for school on time every day.

Let’s Get eReading!
Open eBooks
We have exciting news from the library! I have been working on getting our school enrolled in Open eBooks. You are now able to download and use the Open eBooks app for free. Open eBooks is an app containing thousands of popular and award-winning titles that are free for kids from in-need communities. As a Title school, McBride now qualifies to participate in the program. Readers can immediately download some of the most popular works of the past and present, with no costs, no holds, no late fees, and they are available on the weekends and during vacations. Titles were selected by the Digital Public Library of America’s (DPLA) Curation Corps comprised of school and youth librarians. Visitors can browse the online catalog to view the collection.
In the Tuesday mail, that goes home with your child, he/she will bring home the username and password for accessing the Open eBook app. We hope the Open eBooks app helps you to further support and engage in your child’s learning and foster their love of reading beyond the classroom.
Happy Reading!

Music Memos
Music Memos
As we finished last week in music, all of our “nuts and bolts” targets have been completed. Students have learned what to do during a fire, earthquake, lockout, and lockdown drill in music as well as music room expectations and procedures. Students have begun using the calming corner (dubbed “outer space” for music class) and thus far, have followed directions for using it very well.
This week, we began reviewing concepts learned last year. For upper grades, this includes beat, rhythm, ostinato, dynamics, tempo, music note names, and counting rhythms with numbers through instruments. In first and second grades, students are reviewing “ta” and “ti-ti” as well as reviewing basic percussion technique, and how to analyze the difference between beat, rhythm, and ostinato.
One funny story from today, a first grader handed me a leaf from the bush outside the music room and said “Ms. B, I brought you fresh salad!”. It was very cute.
Don’t forget, Blue and Sapphire Choirs meet every Tuesday students attend school, and we meet in the music room.
As always, feel free to call, email, or stop by if you have questions or would just like to say “hi”!.

The Reading Team Report
McBride Elementary makes a difference by supporting young readers with targeted and intensive reading interventions. These interventions are provided by Mrs. Sumsion, Mrs. Shiel, Mrs. Stobbe, Mrs. Flock, Mrs. Nielsen, and Mrs. Johnstun. Our students come to us for about 25 minutes of small group instruction. This means that we can give them time, individual attention, and extra practice. Between us all we’ve had years of experience of teaching reading! All of us love to read, love kids, and are proud to be Mustangs!
School Support
This week, Mrs. Marshall and Ms. Green began working with individual classes. During the lessons we reviewed what it means to be “Learning Ready”; discussed our school’s “Voice Scale”; and introduced the vocabulary “Expected” and “Unexpected” for school behaviors. Please ask your student to teach you about these important school procedures and expectations.

Angie Oehlert - (McBride Parent) Mrs. Oehlert began the year substituting for Mrs. Franz while she was on a once in a life time trip with her husband. She did an amazing job for the first nine days supporting the beginning of the year work. We appreciate Mrs. Oehlert's calm, warm, caring manner and as well as her willingness to step-in to support McBride staff and students. She is amazing and we are lucky to have her as part of our team.
