Renaissance Elementary School
Renaissance Elementary School is located in Fairburn, Georgia. Vicky Toles is the lead physical education teacher. Each class begins with the "Renaissance Royals Exercise Routine" - which the students love! This week the students are working on fitness centers - including the WiiDance, obstacle course races, hurdles, jump rope, fitness bands and scooter hockey. Students were also working on teamwork through giant cup stacking and scrabble. Ms. Toles does a great job of assessment strategies by incorporating higher order thinking questions between stations. Email Vicky for more information about her fitness centers toles@fultonschools.org

Fulton County Physical Education: Definitions of Instructional Technology, Rigor and MVPA in Physical Education
Rigor - The teacher creates a student-centered, challenging environment where individual student and class performance is continually assessed to guide instruction through extending, refining, and applying tasks or activities. The content is linked for transfer of learning within physical education and among other content areas.
Moderate to Vigorous Physical Activity (MVPA) - MVPA is the time spent on moderate to vigorous physical activity during the lesson. The intensity of the activity depends on the individual’s previous experience in their level of fitness. It is the expectation that students are engaged in MVPA for a minimum of 50% of class time.

Jump Rope For Heart
Does your school participate in Jump Rope for Heart? This is a great project based learning unit for physical education! I had our community representative speak with the students, and we made post cards for the children at the local hospital. This is in addition to the great things that JRFH does to enhance our program. You can also do the Hoops for Heart in the Elementary School! Please check out www.heart.org/jump or www.heart.org/hoops

Why Should You Consider Using Animated Video Clips in P.E.?
By Dr. Rachel Gurewicz & Dr. Jacalyn Lund
Teachers are constantly searching for new ways to present knowledge. This article presents several reasons for the use of animated video clips to enhance instructional effectiveness.
Students Learn Differently. We must acknowledge the fact that students these days learn differently (Levine, 2010) and we, as teachers, must find new ways to facilitate learning. Both teachers at different grade levels within the K–12 school system and higher education professionals desire to implement effective pedagogy practices in their classes. The technology generation can no longer be ignored. Technology provides the opportunity to do things differently while still meeting desired learning outcomes. Not all assignments require a 20-page concept summary to demonstrate student mastery of content. While there is still a place for research papers, assignments should also be pertinent and should enhance learning. Animated video clips give teachers a culturally relevant pedagogy option through which students can connect with the assignment and exercise their basic skills of creativity and engagement in the learning process. The creation of animated video clips is one example of an assignment that can foster the fundamental skills of research, analysis, creativity, and engagement for the current generation of learners.
Students’ Attention Is Limited. Today’s students are highly connected to interactive technology and the media; it is thus becoming more and more challenging for teachers to break this connection while students are in class. Since students live in such a dynamic environment, they prefer an interactive instructional process that is more compatible with the ways that they typically receive information. It is wrong to assume that students do not want to learn. Rather, teachers must support recent research (Anderson, Boyles, & Rainie, 2012; Levine, 2010) and recognize that students’ needs have changed over the years. Today’s students learn best when they have an opportunity to interact with information instead of just passively listening to a teacher talk. Teachers must construct learning activities that will draw the students in and encourage their curiosity to explore and embrace learning. The creation of animated video clips offers students opportunities to engage with specific content in a dynamic way. The construction of a visual representation in the form of Flash movies via animated video clips allows for a variety of pedagogical interactions within and between students and their teacher. These much-needed interactions may also enhance the level of students’ motivation to actively participate in the learning process.
Increased Student Motivation. Similar to the constructivism theory that encourages the engagement of students in the learning process rather than simply offering them the correct answers (Brandt, 1997), the importance of students’ motivation to learn cannot be overlooked. The creation of an animated video clip as an assignment for a class project presents an opportunity for learners to be engaged in their own learning process, which motivates them to invest in the learning process. Once students are invested in the learning process they may forget about required learning and complete the assignment (and learning!) because they enjoy it.
Spreading the Learning. The ability to communicate with others is an important outcome of education. Students should be able to communicate with various entities beyond the classroom; in many ways they already have been doing just that for quite some time. The development of social media networks emphasizes the notion of globalization. Teachers can use social media skills to encourage students to share their knowledge with others. In addition, animated video clips provide students with a way to share information with their global friends via social media channels. By sharing their self-made clips with a global community of friends, family members, and other web users across the world, the simple assignment from an instructional course has the potential to benefit many others.
