Weekly RAM Newsletter

A Brief Note from Dr. Burke

Dear Ram families,

Last week was emotional, but between the vigil and the acts of love and kindness displayed on campus and throughout the community, I am finding myself feeling more optimistic and empowered by the promise of the #PowayStrong movement. I am so proud of the way our teachers, counselors and classified staff worked to support our students. They created safe spaces, and opportunities for students to talk through their feelings. Our Where Everyone Belongs (a.k.a.WEB) team led by Ms. McKibbin, Ms. Rubacky and Mrs. Fenwick, assisted student leaders in facilitating a lunch-time event in which students wrote letters and cards of support for those impacted by last Saturday's tragic events, and thank you notes for first responders. Our volunteer choir director, Ruth Wong, went above and beyond, conducting her students as they sang at the vigil at Poway High and then again on Tuesday during lunch, as they sang for their classmates. All of this was featured in News 8's Zevely Zone. Here is the link in case you missed it. Our students are sure to inspire you.

Thursday was a great day at Twin Peaks; the reading energy was through the roof! We want to thank everyone who has registered to support the read-a-thon. It’s not too late to sign up; your student has until May 12th to raise money to earn as many tickets as possible for the "Prize Mall" drawings. Once you have registered we hope you will post your student's fundraising page on your social media pages to help raise money for the school. Thanks for your support!

Heads Up! Tomorrow you will receive a Connect 5 message about registration for next year. Poway Unified is shifting to an online registration process. Tomorrow's message will explain more about the process, but one major advantage of this change is that families with multiple children only need to complete a single family packet.

I will close with a reminder that this Tuesday and Wednesday are minimum days, with a 12:40 dismissal time. Traffic will be congested on Tuesday as Tierra Bonita dismisses at 12:25 that day. Please plan accordingly and drive safely around the students.

That's it for now. We look forward to seeing all our students tomorrow, and remember, it's a 2/4/6 day.

Sincerely,

Dr. Burke

SAVE THE DATE

The District has contracted with a company to create a district-wide facilities master plan. Part of this process includes visits to all sites and meetings with a variety of stakeholders, including parents. Our visit is scheduled for May 30th. The consultants will be in the library from 9:00-10:00 to solicit your input. This is a great opportunity for you to share your voice and go on record with the improvements you think our campus needs in order to create spaces that will support world class learners. We hope to see you there.

ADL Walk Against Hate

This year, Twin Peaks has partnered with the Anti-Defamation League in San Diego to work towards becoming a school where hate is not tolerated. The No Place For Hate committee has held a school-wide signing of the Resolution of Respect and have also facilitated two classrooms activities for their peers: Slurs and Offensive Jokes, and How to Address Them and Addressing Culture and Identity.

In San Diego, the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) are celebrating their 2nd annual Walk Against Hate which brings the entire community together to promote diversity. Thousands of students, parents, business leaders and community members will walk with one another to highlight the values of respect and inclusion. We would love to show our RAM P.R.I.D.E. by joining other San Diego schools and the ADL on their Walk Against Hate.
