About Rutherford
- Ernest Rutherford, 1st Baron Rutherford of Nelson, was born August 30, 1871 and died on October 19, 1937. He was british physicist who became known as the father of nuclear physics. Rutherford got very many medals up to at least 7 medals. The most important medal he got was the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1908. In 1911, he was the first to discover that atoms have a small charge in the nucleus surrounded by largely empty space by electrons, this became Rutherford model of the atom.
When Rutherford became professor at Manchester in 1907.
Rutherford always gathered a group of bright young researchers around him. In this group photo of 1910 are Ernest Marsden and Hans Geiger. In the front is Professors Schuster and Rutherford.
Hans Geiger was Rutherford’s main partner in alpha-ray research from 1907 to 1913.
