Friday Tidbits
Second Grade
Dear Second Grade Parents,
This week in math, the children learned how to make change by counting up for items worth up to $1.00. Please continue to practice this at home, as well as basic addition and subtraction facts. We will work on recalling math facts for speed in the near future.
On Monday, our class participated in the Hour of Code event, joining millions of other students around the world. Second Graders had the choice of coding for Angry Birds, Minecraft, and Star Wars. Even when the activity got tricky, we persevered and had fun (including teachers)!
Mrs. Kaufman led a two-day lesson on paragraph writing. The children needed to identify and write the main idea, detail sentences, and concluding sentence from a paragraph on December holidays. Mrs. King read Too Many Tamales by Gary Soto, which featured a Mexican family gathering together to make tamales for Christmas and young Maria loses her mother’s ring while preparing the meal. Afterward, we watched a video of a real-life family who also follows the tradition of making tamales for Christmas and we wrote a summary paragraph on the story. Ms. Holzer read Latkes, Latkes Good to Eat: A Chanukah Story by Naomi Howland. The children played the dreidel game and Ms. Holzer made homemade latkes for the students, who enjoyed them so much that they asked for seconds!
Yesterday, we studied the structure of the igloo as well as the steps needed to make one. The children worked on a sequencing activity of how to build an igloo by placing photos of each step in the correct order and writing each step under each photo.
Thank you to you all for your donations for our friends at A Wider Circle and Mary’s Center. We had a lovely holiday party yesterday decorating onesies for the babies at Mary’s Center. The onesies and the socks for mother and babies will be delivered to the Silver Spring location next week.
Have a great weekend!
