Caldecott Awards Winners
First Grade!
What is the Caldecott Award?
Here are five books we are going to read that were awarded the Caldecott Medal:
The Lion and the Mouse
For a lesson, this book could teach the students that anyone can do something important or help others regardless of their size, shape, color, or personality. This could could lead to a great classroom community builder.
Locomotive
This book would a perfect lead into American history, or a lesson on machines and how they work. The book displays the sound, speed, and strength of the train, which could lead into students writing about a train and where they were headed, as well as having them illustrate what their train would look like.
Golem
Golem is a great lesson into world history and other religions. Sometimes religion can be overlooked in schools, but children should still be taught about other cultures and religions. Some children in the class may even be Jewish, so it would be a great classroom community builder to allow them to assist in explaining their culture and traditions.
Smoky Night
Smoky Night exemplifies how people should get along with others no matter their nationality, background, or race. It also points out that violence is not the answer to problems. Teaching students to accept and get along with one another could be a great classroom community builder. Also, this book could lead into bullying and how bullying is never the answer, or violence, because speaking with someone calmly about a situation first will be better. The lesson could move into working with others and being personable.
Grandfather's Journey
Some children in the class may be from another country and now live in America, but still love and miss the country they were originally from. I think this book would be a great opportunity for students to write about their own experiences if they have them, or think about what it would be like to go through that same experience and write about it. Then the students could share with the class, so they know a little more about each other
