Happy New Year & Welcome to 2021!
This Week's Theme: ACTIVE LISTENING
Active listening means listening to understand.
There is a difference between listening and hearing. When we listen to someone, we only hear the words that another person is saying and we only remember about 25%-50% of what they say. When we hear someone, we are paying attention to the complete message being communicated.
If you aren’t actively listening, then you aren’t truly hearing the person speaking to you!
How to Become an Active Listener
Pay Attention: Give the speaker your undivided attention
- Acknowledge the message
- Eye contact is key
- Don’t think of what you will say next!
Show That You're Listening: Body Language
- Nod occasionally
- Smile and use other facial expressions
- "What do you mean when you say... ."
- "Is this what you mean?"
Defer Judgment: Don’t frustrate the speaker
- Interrupting is a waste of time
- Allow the speaker to finish each point before asking questions
Respond Appropriately: Gain information and perspective
- Be candid, open and honest in your response
- Assert your opinions respectfully
The next time you have a conversation or discussion with someone, practice your active listening skills!
