Notre Dame Catholic Primary School
Foundations for Life Long Learning 14 March 2019
Dear Parents and Staff
PRAYERS
Your prayers are asked for the quick recovery of our amazing “Director of First Impressions”, Joanita Stapleton, who had surgery yesterday to have some gall stones removed. It was intended that this would be done through keyhole surgery but there were some complications which meant that a more invasive operation was needed. Joanita is now recovering and, in her usual selfless way, she has asked that no flowers or cards are sent. She will, though, accept all of our prayers in support of her and her family. We are not sure just how long Joanita will be away so, during her absence, I ask for your patience if your requests at the school office take a little longer to accommodate.
INTERFACTION SWIMMING
The butterflies were very evident with many of our children this morning as they prepared to leave for their Swimming Carnival at Bayswater Waves Aquatic Centre. I wish all competitors a great day of fun competition and feel confident that they will all perform to the best of their ability.
MERIT AWARDS
As the Leadership Team will be away from the school at meetings tomorrow the Merit Awards will be presented by the class teachers. I congratulate, in advance, all of those who are to receive Awards at the Assembly.

YR 5 CLASS NEWS
Wow! What a start to the year it has been for the ‘Fabulous Fives’ as we like to call ourselves. In Literacy, we have been challenging ourselves with new guided reading activities, utilising readtheory.org to help extend our thinking when reading and using BTN as a way to capture current events in our World. In Maths we have been using place value, plotting decimals and are currently revising time and lapses of time into our thinking. By the time you read this, you will understand how bad our jokes and puns can be!
GEOGRAPHY
In Geography, Year 5 have been learning about a country of their own choosing from North or South America. As well as producing a poster (to be displayed very soon in our classrooms), students needed to present a 2 minute talk on their chosen country. This is a wonderful precursor to our Night of the Notables oral task later this year. Some of the posters are displayed below. It has been wonderful to see the variety of ‘destinations’, including the United States of America, Canada, Brazil, Colombia, Bahamas and Puerto Rico. We even had some students choose Greenland because even though its sovereign is Denmark; geographically, it is a part of North America!
ART
In Art this term, the Year 5 students are creating 3 dimensional birds from around the World. Earlier in the year, students had to choose from a selection of eight birds and consider the colours that are on display throughout their feathers. The children then had to mix paint and create the colours to then stick onto their outline. It has been a long (and Mrs Jennings would say messy) process, but some of the work being produced looks to be a real asset to brightening our rooms!
TECHNOLOGY: MAKERSPACE
Year 5 are fortunate enough to have our Makerspace program in Term One this year. Both classes have been divided into groups with one group programming ‘Dash’ the robot and the other group designing small electronic devices using ‘Little Bits’. It has been great to see their imaginations at work with the PP and Year 1 classes coming in to watch the Dash parades!
Year 6 Class News
The Year Sixes have had a very busy start to the year and it has been pleasing to see the students settle into the rigours of their final year at Notre Dame. From taking on new leadership roles to spending a week in Albany for camp, the students have embraced the opportunity to step out of their comfort zone and take on the new challenges of Year Six.
After an incredible week at camp, we asked our Year Sixes to write a recount about their experience in Albany. We hope you enjoy reading about some of the experiences the students have shared.
CAMP QUARANUP
DAY 1
I woke up with an enormous wave of excitement and eagerness. I was tired but I didn’t let that pull me down, so I stopped my alarm on my iPad and happily headed off to the bathroom to get ready. While I was getting dressed and ready I was imagining about how camp would be like and how it would look like. I got my last minute essentials and went to the car. In the car I was sweating but also had a decent happy smile, my dad could tell that I was really keen, and indeed I was! I said bye to my dad and went directly to my friends and their bags. We got on the bus and I could hear everyone buzzing around. “We’re growing up!” I joked, “I’m not, I’m still short!” giggled Kristel. We set off and a huge cheer comes from inside and outside of the bus. Honestly, the bus made me feel like I was on a plane. When we got to Camp Quaranup a HUGE weight got lifted off my shoulders because it was my first time away from my parents for so long. I felt so free!

DAY 2
When I woke up in the morning it was really cold, and we did some morning Activities. Soon after that we had breakfast, it was delicious! Next, we got ready to go to the Historic Whaling Station. When we got there, some of the things were cool but the photos of the Whales were hard to look at.
We then had lunch there, it was pretty fun. Afterwards, we got back on the bus and split up into our classes. 6M went to the WA Museum Albany/Amity first, and 6P went to the Princess Royal Fortress ANZAC Museum. We then swapped. I really enjoyed the ANZAC Museum because we got to find out whether our solider survived the war or not.

DAY 3
In the morning we had a full breakfast and then we got ready to go to Denmark Thrills Adventure Park. It was a long bus drive to get there but eventually we made it! At the Adventure Park there were lots of activities on offer. There was bubble soccer, there was a 95m zip line and a 15m high tree climb! I did bubble soccer first and it was very enjoyable. After morning tea, I put on my harness and I went to the tree swing. Eventually, I was finally able to go upside down on the swing. After the tree swing, I went on both zip lines which were really cool. We had lunch and then played a bit more before heading back to camp. At 5.30pm we had a mass and then after dinner we did an Anzac Relfection with Brother Stephen. What a busy day!
Samantha (6M)
DAY 4
A great activity we did today was canoeing. I was nervous to start but after a few minutes of paddling, I realised that I had nothing to worry about. We then learnt the strokes and I was excited to try all of them and give them a go. Tui and I were in a canoe with one of the instructors. I was happy I was with an instructor because I knew I wouldn’t get stranded out in the water. Once we had hopped into the canoes, we started forward paddling towards the bridge. It was hard at first, but I got used to it. We reached the bridge and we paddled under it. The instructor then led us through a really rocky path. We hit some rocks and we nearly tipped, but we made it. The instructor then told us we were going to do a deck run. A deck run is where you have to run across the edge of all the canoes and not fall in. Luke and Tui had a go. Luke made it but Tui fell in. After the deck run, we had to do a Toyota jump in our canoes. Then we paddled back. Canoeing was a fun experience and I would love to do it again!
Hollie (6M)
DAY 5
Our time at camp came and went. Soon enough, it was time to leave. We loaded our bags onto the bus. I felt so sad leaving Camp Quaranup, however, it was time to encounter the long journey back to school.
A long tiresome journey later, we arrived at Notre Dame. I never thought seeing my family would be so amazing. Knowing I survived nearly one whole week without them surprises me.
Overall, I thought camp was an amazing opportunity to experience things I’ve never done before. I loved all the activities we did because it was so fun to work in a team. Camp was awesome and a great time to spend with my friends!

Learn how to empower your children in the face of a bully here: https://parenttv.com/…/mean-girls-and-king-pins-a-parents-…/
Have you taught your child the 3 R's of life learning that is crucial to the prevention of bullying?
These skills learned in the early years through playing are those that a child uses as a template for managing all future interactions – including the noxious ones that pop up and are often labelled as bullying.

The Parent's Guide To Bullying Course
Just in time for National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence, ParentTV has released a course titled The Parent's Guide to Bullying by bullying expert Rachel Downie.
Who is Rachel Downie?
Rachel is an educator, speaker and social entrepreneur who specialises in bullying and self-harm prevention.
Rachel has worked in public and private school settings since 1996, across four states in many different roles. Students have filled her every day at work as Head of Faculty, Head of Welfare, Deputy Principal and Classroom Teacher and she loved every moment.
Over the last 10 years, Rachel has seen bullying and harm (particularly online) spiral out of control and it doesn’t discriminate. After a student in her community took his life, she decided to actively work to change Australia’s cultural acceptance of bullying and started Stymie; an anonymous online reporting system for use in schools nationally.
The Parent's Guide To Bullying Course
A must watch course for every parent who has a school-aged child. Learn exactly what is and what isn’t classed as bullying, what to do if your child is being bullied, how to teach your child to deal with bullies and what to do if your child is the one bullying others.
Watch the course for free through our membership on ParentTV here:
