The 6th graders are continuing to read Freak the Mighty. They are really getting into it. They finished their first set of comprehension questions and got the second set this week. They should be keeping up on these questions as we read the book.
We started our lesson on Adjectives. They started writing their descriptive Halloween stories. This is all they want to work on because they are so excited about this assignment. They got a rubric which explains all the requirements Let me know if you have any questions.
Spelling Unit 5 dealt with the short and long “u” sound. We are having a contest to see if they have to do the Spelling Review packet next week. They need to spell all the words correctly on the packet as a class and then they will have a week off of spelling. Ask your child about it for more details.
Have a great weekend!

Math News and Updates
Amanda Lois amanda.lois@yorkville.k12.wi.us
This week in math, the sixth graders took the Unit 1 Test on Monday. It was neat to see all of the different strategies used to “practice” for the Unit Test. The rest of the week was spent working on review activities on adding, subtracting and multiplying fractions and mixed numbers. We reviewed borrowing with subtracting and they learned a new “trick” to make multiplying fractions easier. The goal for the year is to be proficient in all fraction operations, so we will continue work with fractions throughout the rest of the year with various activities to help each student at his/her own level.
Next week we will work with dividing fractions and mixed numbers as well as solving multi-step story problems involving fractions and mixed numbers. We will end the week with the Module 4 Quiz.
Have a great weekend!

Social Studies News and Updates
Mary Niccolai mary.niccolai@yorkville.k12.wi.us
In social studies we began Chapter 2, Exploring the Americas, by working on the vocabulary. Chapter 2 looks at different explorers and the countries they represented. We will also look at how new ideas changed the way people lived. The competition for colonies is also part of this chapter, as we look at conflicts and religious rivalries.
This week we discussed the Renaissance and investigated Leonardo da Vinci. Ask your son or daughter for an interesting fact about this man of the Renaissance.
On Friday we are spending our last work day working on the scale drawings of North America and next week will begin our next Friday geography project. Please check Skyward for updated grades or to check for missing work. Feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns you may have.
Please encourage your son or daughter to work on test corrections if needed.
Have a great weekend.

Science News and Updates
Becky Seitz becky.seitz@yorkville.k12.wi.us
In science we finished our chapter by completing a 3D topographic map in class project. The students gained a better understanding of contour lines and changes in elevation. We will begin our new chapter next week on Astronomy! The students will be introduced to a new vocabulary program on their computers called Quizlet that allows them to attach an image to the definition and it then creates flashcards and review games to help them gain a better understanding of the terms. Just an FYI...in Skyward, if a 0% grade is given, that is because a student did not have the assignment turned in when it was due. If the grade shows a “ * ” it is not missing (as Skyward defaults it to) it simple has not yet been entered. Hope this clears up any confusion. Have a great weekend!

This week the sixth graders had the opportunity to play Angleball, which is very unique and new game to our school as of last spring. We also started our basketball unit with ball handling, dribbling, jump stops, pivoting, knockout, and 2on 2 basketball games. We are looking forward the benefits from this cardiovascular endurance activity!
