Aloha Will Never Die!
The Illegal Overthrow of Hawaii
Thesis
The Overthrow of the Hawaii Kingdom happened on January 17, 1893. President William Mickinley, President Grover Cleveland, and Minister John L. Stevens played a big role in the overthrow that made it possible.
President William Mickinley
President William McKinley was president during 1897-1901. President McKinley signed the bill to annex the Hawaii one July 7th, 1898 . In 1897, he had advocated the Hawaii annexation. After that, McKinley tried to get a new annexation treaty. Congress did not accept it. McKinley pressured senators to approve of annexation. Mickinley proposed an annexation resolution. On May 4, 1898, the house of representatives got the resolution paper. The senate then passed the annexation. The U.S. took over Hawaii on August 12, 1898. In 1900 ,the first territorial governor in Hawaii was made. McKinley's policy on Hawaii was similar to what America did with the Philippines.
President Grover Cleveland
Gtover Cleveland was president in 1885-1889 and also in 1893-1897. Cleveland was an anti-imperialist. President Cleveland saw James Blount as a investigator. Cleveland had supported the idea of free trade with Hawai'i. Cleveland had to know what was going on in the Hawaiian Kingdom at the time. Blount decided to take down all American flags from Hawaii's building. Cleveland didn't like the idea and wanted to fight for Hawaii's rights and beliefs. Cleveland responded to the Hawaiians' protest against the overthrow. He knew it was illegal and immoral. Cleveland's protest was by ordering an investigation into its legality. Even though he felt the same as the Hawaiians, his false statements and actions influenced the Americans to annex. During the annexation, Cleveland left office and President William Mickinley became president.
Minister John L. Stevens
John L. Stevens was a U.S. Minister in Hawai'i during 1893. Stevens met two men who were interested about Hawaii. The Committee of Safety felt like there was it put American lives in danger. U.S marines and U.S. sailors were sent to the Hawaiian Kingdom by Stevens. Steven was accused of ordering all orders by himself. He has been accused many times of abusing his powers. Stevens wanted Queen Liliuokalani's powers to be restored. President Stanford Dole refused to give power the Queen her powers back. Dole thought that the Hawaiians had no business to interrupt with any other their business.
Conclusion
President Mickinley, President Cleveland, and Minister Stevens played a big role in the overthrow to make it possible. This topic is important to history because of what happened to Hawaii during this time was illegal and immoral, the overthrow and annexation still happened and that's what made Hawaii part of the United States. I want the readers to know from my project that in the past, Hawaii and the Hawaiians were taken advantage of and treated less then Americans. They thought they could do whatever they want and got it their way. I want them to support Hawaii and share how this was unfair.
Is Hawaii Legally and Lawfully a State of The Union
Most folks have heard that Hawaii is a state, one of the United States of America. Most people, including those who live in Hawaii, accept that statement as a fact. The truth is that each and every step along Hawaii's path from sovereign and independent nation, to annexed territory, to state, was done in violent was and treaties, without the wishes of the Hawaiian people. Many people, including President Grover Cleveland, opposed the annexation of Hawaii. It is I'legally a part of the union because Hawaii got forced to sign unlawfully treaties. Hawaii shouldn't have been apart of the U.S. but they ended up becoming the 50th State.
