Help Us Advocate for Fair Funding
New Albany - Plain Local Schools 5.28.19
Dear New Albany-Plain Local Schools Taxpayers,
The Board and administration of New Albany-Plain Local Schools continue to search for additional cost savings to benefit our taxpayers while advocating for fair funding changes in the unconstitutional public school funding formula used in Ohio. While recent media reports have included proposed changes to school funding in Ohio based upon a bipartisan model created by Representatives Cupp and Patterson, it remains highly unlikely that the General Assembly will reach agreement on legislation that will substantially increase funding to our school district from the State of Ohio as recommended.
More realistically, the Board and administration are focusing our efforts with elected and State officials to propose legislative changes which would guarantee that our school district should minimally receive the same amount of State funding provided to chartered non-public schools (private schools) in Ohio. Specifically, we seek an increase from $786.00 per student which we currently receive from the State to approximately $1,300 which the State funds for each student in a chartered non-public or private school in Ohio. The language to guarantee our taxpayers this equity in funding was line item vetoed by former Governor Kasich in the last biennial budget.
Parents and community members have asked us how to help. Now is the time for action! We need our taxpayers to reach out to legislators and encourage legislative support to change unconstitutional funding for our school district by increasing the amount of money provided to us by the State. While we fully support the proposed model and significant increase in funding recommended by Representatives Cupp and Patterson, we believe the guarantee to receive the same amount of State funding that non-public charter or private schools receive is more likely. Any change by the State will not increase the personal property taxes of our residents.
A Call to Action
Please take a few minutes to call or send a message similar to this (although you are encouraged to personalize it) to our legislators.
Senator ______ (or Representative ____),
My name is ________________ and I am a (taxpayer, taxpayer and parent) who (lives/works) within the boundaries of New Albany-Plain Local Schools. Representatives Cupp (R) and Patterson (D) have recently introduced their Fair School Funding plan. When adopted and fully funded, this plan would make a very positive impact in funding for our school district without increasing residential taxes. I urge you to support this important plan to restructure unconstitutional funding for schools in Ohio.
Should the General Assembly be unable to reach agreement to fully fund this proposed plan in the biennial budget due June 30, 2019, I strongly encourage you to minimally pass legislation that would guarantee that New Albany-Plain Local Schools receive the same amount of State funding that chartered non-public or private schools receive. As a taxpayer, it is unfair that the students in our school district do not receive the same amount guaranteed to chartered non-public or private schools.
Thank you for advocating for a fair, minimum level of school funding for ALL students in Ohio in the upcoming biennial budget.
Sincerely,
