Pastor Rich's Weekly Devotional
Grateful
And to every beast of the earth, and to every bird of the air,
and to everything that creeps on the earth, everything that has the breath of life,
I have given every green plant for food. And it was so.
God saw everything that he had made, and indeed, it was very good.
And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day.” (Genesis 1:30,31)
How eye-catching it is to see deer grazing on ground level vegetation. How stirring to watch the path of a hawk or an eagle soaring overhead. How humorous to see the chipmunks and squirrels skittering about. How inspiring to watch the sun’s reflection on a lake change hues as it rises above the horizon.
The beauty of our region is something that the great Reformer John Calvin never beheld. But he saw enough of France and Switzerland to convince him of the beauty of our world. John Calvin once wrote, “Creation is the Theatre of God’s Glory.” Calvin said every human being is “formed to be a spectator of the created world and given eyes that one might be led to its author by contemplating so beautiful a representation.”
The principal actor in this vast theatrical production is none other than God alone, evoking desire by “showing himself in the visible splendor of his apparel.” (quotes from Belden C. Lane, St. Louis University, “Spirituality as the Performance of Desire: Calvin on the World as a Theatre of God’s Glory”).
Distancing himself from any sense of the worship of creation, Calvin wanted to draw his readers attention to the creative impulses of our God, the one responsible for all creation.
How thankful we can be for the beauty of our world. Even in the waning days of fall, we can see the beauty of creation everywhere we wish to look.
May our hearts be filled with thanksgiving for the gift of our world,
Rich

Retirement Announcement
Nurse Emily Grakul is Retiring.
It is with mixed emotions that we have accepted the resignation of our Faith Community Nurse, Emily Grakul, effective the end of February 2024. Emily has been a true blessing to our congregation. However, Emily is looking forward to spending more time with her family, and so we will celebrate her retirement. In the meantime, please let Pastor Rich know if you are aware of a registered nurse who may be interested in becoming OLCCP's next Faith Community Nurse.
The role is approximately 16 hours per week and a job description is available in the church office. We hope to interview and select a candidate before the end of the year so that the new Faith Community Nurse may have the opportunity to work directly with Emily for a few weeks and ensure a seamless transition.
