Sunspots are dark spots that appear on the surface of the sun. They are cooler than the surrounding areas.

Solar flares are explosions that occur on the Sun's surface. Solar flares often occur near sunspots
Auroras are caused by solar flares and coronal mass ejections. When the flares or mass ejections combine with the magnetic field over the Earth an aurora is formed
