The Long Orange Line Tours the District
Pennsbury High School's Long Orange Line paid a visit to Eleanor Roosevelt, Fallsington, and Makefield Elementary Schools on Friday, October 7. The visits are designed to introduce the youngest students in Pennsbury to the world-famous marching band. Each music section performed a short song to demonstrate the different instruments in the band before the entire band performed their remarkable field show.
At each elementary school, band director Chris Bygott introduced members of the band who were alumni for that particular school. At the end, one lucky elementary student was chosen to come up and lead the band in the Pennsbury fight song, complete with an official drum major hat and gloves. Students were encouraged to join band when they are old enough, so that they too can one day march in the Long Orange Line.
We Got Spirit, Yes We Do!
As part of Homecoming/Spirit Week, students at Pennsbury High School got creative and decorated doors throughout the school that represented four different areas of focus. Each grade level was assigned a different category - Safety (9th grade), Respect (10th grade), Success (11th grade), and Falcon Pride (12th grade.) Students decorated the doors during the NEST period. The activity is the culmination of various Spirit Week activities leading up to homecoming and is designed to bolster camaraderie among the student body. The creators of the winning door will receive a pizza party!
Be Smart and Protect Your Heart
On September 29, the World Heart Federation encouraged people around the globe to design and complete an exercise route in the shape of a heart for World Heart Day. Fifth-grade students at Afton Elementary School accepted the challenge to improve their heart health by walking, skipping, dancing, and practicing yoga in a heart shape in the gymnasium. Be Smart and Protect Your Heart!
PHS AFJROTC
The PHS AFJROTC has been busy since school started. On September 28, 22 members of the PHS Air Force Junior ROTC program performed a campus cleanup. They scoured the entire campus and picked up over 50 pounds of trash.
“I was amazed at the turn out and also how organized all of my cadets were. For our first time (holding this event) we really did a great job," said senior Adam Pulka, the PHS AFJROTC Cadet Commander
The beautification event was organized by the newly formed PHS AFJROTC chapter of the Kitty Hawk Air Society; the JROTC equivalent of the National Honor Society (cadets must have a B or better in all classes and an A in JROTC to join). The Kitty Hawk Chapter focuses on community service and improving academic standards for all PHS JROTC students. The local president is senior JROTC cadet Jack Shea.
The PHS AFJROTC also recently raised over $1,000 to help offset activity costs for the cadets at their annual fall car wash in Yardley.
"It’s become a fall ritual where our students get to bond outside the classroom and raise money for themselves,” said Maj. (Ret) Jim MacEachern.
JROTC is an elective for students in grades 9-12 that focuses community services, peer leadership, and improving oral and written communication. "The kids really become close and often life-long friends. It’s truly a family within the PHS family,” said SMSgt (Ret) Shannon Lynch, also a JROTC teacher.

Penn Valley Student Council Elections
Fifth-graders at Penn Valley Elementary School participated in student council elections last week. Students submitted job applications for the opportunity to lead as President, Vice President, Secretary, or Treasurer of their student council. Prior to elections, each candidate gave a speech explaining how they demonstrate the characteristics of leadership, respect, responsibility, pride, creativity, and empathy needed in order to serve their Penn Valley peers. All candidates did an excellent job and made Penn Valley proud!
German-American Day at PHS
October 6 was German-American Day. This heritage holiday commemorates the thirteen German Mennonite families from Krefeld who landed in Philadelphia. On October 6, 1683, these families established the first German settlement in the original thirteen colonies and named it Germantown.
At Pennsbury High School, students enrolled in German learned about famous German-Americans and their contributions. Seniors Megan Spielgelberg and Lillian Carlson delivered a segment in German on the morning announcements about when the first Germans arrived in America. (Video below!)
Math Fun at Walt Disney!
Kindergarten students at Walt Disney Elementary School focused on sharpening their math skills with numbers zero through five this week. With all of the rainy weather, teacher Tarisa Bosack came up with a creative "zero" lesson."
"We brought out the parachute and added a bunch of snowballs. The students were tasked to shake it until there were ZERO balls on the parachute! It was a super fun lesson, gave the students a much needed brain break and helped serve as inside recess time," said Mrs. Bosack.
We appreciate Mrs. Bosack's efforts to make learning math fun!
