Health
The Year 4s will be looking at the lessons titled ‘Recognising and expressing my feelings’.
The Year 5s will be learning about looking after our bodies and will be examining the effects of advertising around self-care products.
The Year 6s will be continuing to learn about looking after our bodies and will be examining the effects of advertising around self-care products.
Zespri Young and Healthy
During this term, Rākau Nui will be participating in the Zespri Young and Healthy Virtual Adventure. It’s a fun program that runs for 5 weeks, using the pedometers that came home last week, and encourages activity, drinking plenty of water and other simple daily actions to support health and well being. You can find more information at www.youngandhealthy.org.nz.
Lollies at School
It has come to our attention that some students have been bringing lollies to school and giving them out to other students. Some students are also going to the dairy before school to buy lollies to give to others. We are aware that lollies are sometimes being eaten at school and sometimes being put in bags for later. Could you please talk with your child about not bringing lollies to school and not accepting lollies, or any other food, from others?
Halloween Disco
A notice went home yesterday about the Halloween Disco taking place Friday 28th October. Tickets are $5 and can be purchased via Kindo or the school office. Thank you to the home and school for organising this event.
Sports Equipment at School
Now that the traffic light system has been removed we are able to provide students with sport equipment, such as basketballs and soccer balls, at break times again. We strongly recommend that your child does not bring their own sports equipment to school any longer and instead uses the equipment provided by school.
Hats in Term 4
A reminder that during Term 4 all students need to wear a wide brimmed hat when outside. Please ensure that your child’s hat is named and they know to keep it inside their closed school bag during the day. Hats are available from the school office for $25. We also encourage everyone to wear sunscreen and this is available in all classrooms if students wish to apply it at school.
Bake Sale
On Thursday 27th October, Rākau Nui will run a bake sale. The money raised on the day will go towards the Year 6 day out, Year 6 graduation and resources for STEAM.
As such, we are asking that if you are in a position to do so, Rākau Nui students bring one plate of baked goods (cupcakes, cakes, biscuits, slices, etc) to sell on the day. These items will be available during morning tea and lunchtime for the students in the school to purchase so they can also bring money to purchase food items. Baking will be priced $1-2 per item.
Please send your baking to school in a clearly named container (if you would like it returned to you) with a list of ingredients. To keep our children with allergies safe, please do not bring items with nuts of any kind.
Activities for Year 4s
There are several activities planned for our Year 4 students, while our Year 5 and 6 students are away at camp:
Monday 7 November - St John will be running some age appropriate first aid training
Tuesday 8 November - Wheels Day - students can bring bikes or scooters and their helmets
Wednesday 9 November - Capital Basketball will be running a day of skills and games
Grocery Hamper Raffle
Home and School is running a big Grocery Raffle. We'll be sending home tickets for families to sell on our behalf at the beginning of November. But first we need your help to make the hampers! Please can every family donate a grocery item for the hampers. Each class has something different to bring along (see school newsletter). Please ensure all items have a valid expiry date. Return to school by Friday 11 November.
Te Korowai o Horokiwi Kapa Haka Festival Term 4
As many of you will know the Newlands area has a long tradition of sharing and celebrating kapa haka through an annual festival. Initially this festival was hosted at Newlands Primary School and in recent years it was hosted by Newlands Primary School at Newlands College. Due to the ongoing challenges with the pandemic we have not been able to hold a festival since 2019. As our Horokiwi cluster continues to grow and build connections we are keen to not miss the opportunity to hold a festival before the year is out. With the unavailability of the college hall in Term 4, Newlands Intermediate has offered to host this streamlined event in their hall. To ensure this is a positive and safe event for all in attendance, each school will have to consider carefully the size of their groups to ensure tamariki and whanau from across Horokiwi can attend. At Pararangi School this means only our Year 6 tamariki will be part of this festival. There will be opportunities in the future for other tamariki to take part.
If you have any questions or would like to discuss anything with us, please remember that your first point of contact is your child’s home class teacher. Our email addresses are:
