Prairie Vista's Weekly Newsletter
June 7th - Last Day of School
Four Star School
A letter from Mrs. Twibell
It is hard to believe that this is the final newsletter of the year. I would like to thank all of the parents for taking such an important role in the educational growth of their child/ren, and for supporting our staff as we continue to encourage each child to reach their highest potential.
I would also like to take this opportunity to express my appreciation to our PTO board who accomplished so much this year. Our volunteers never cease to amaze me with the time, dedication and thoughtfulness they put into everything they do. Heartfelt thanks to the outgoing PTO board for their hard work and a warm welcome to next year’s officers: Amy Kuzmic (President), Sarah Kubinski (President-Elect), Teresa Meyer (Treasurer), Mita Juristyarini (Corresponding Secretary) and Kristin Pruitt (Recording Secretary).
Attached to this newsletter you will find the 2017-2018 PHM Corporation calendar. The calendar is also available online. Please note that the first day of school is Wednesday, August 23rd for students in grades 1-5 and Thursday, August 24th for kindergarten students. The PTO will be sponsoring an Ice Cream Social and a Building Walk Through on Monday, August 21st from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Teachers will be available to meet and greet families on Tuesday, August 22nd from 1 to 2 p.m. The school office will be open on Wednesday, August 9th.
A letter will be sent out to parents in August to update you on further information. Report cards will be mailed out the week of June 12th. ISTEP results will be available by the end of June. Information will be mailed home on how to access your child's scores.
Finally, I would like to wish our current 5th graders all the best as they make the transition to middle school in August. I know they are eager and ready to move on and experience all of the opportunities that await them. We will miss them but we are proud of them and happy for them as they move forward on this next step to adulthood.
Have a safe and relaxing summer!
13 Reasons Why note to parents:
P-H-M Counselors have been made aware of a new Netflix show "13 Reasons Why." The story is about a high school student who dies by suicide and then leaves a message blaming the people close to her for her death. Mental health experts nationwide have expressed concerns that the program glorifies suicide and leaves survivors with the idea that it is their fault if a loved one completes suicide.
We want the parents of our 4th-8th grade students, along with Penn High School parents, to be aware of this television program and give you resources to use if your son or daughter watches the show and needs to process its content. We have loaded "13 Reasons Why" talking points to the District website that you can use when discussing with your child:
https://www.phmschools.org/sites/phmschools.org/files/13rw_talking_points_final.pdf
Remember that talking about suicide doesn't cause suicide. Making connections and showing people we care reduces isolation that may contribute to suicide ideation. Please remember that the counselors at all our schools are available to talk to your son or daughter and parents if you or they need help.
We also have many resources on the District website that can help parents and students. Please visit www.phmschools.org/lifelines.
