Irons Jr. High Newsletter
We Are Hawks!
March
Irons Family,
As I sit down to write the newsletter for the month, I always think to myself, will this be the month we have our next major surprise? All I can say is it is 20-21! I hope everyone was safe and warm throughout our significant snowstorm! If you or your family need assistance, please reach out to Irons. We have moved a few dates around to accommodate the extra days off. Our Spring Picture Day will now take place on April 13th. If your child has not completed course selection, please reach out to our counseling team for assistance.
I know that many families have questions concerning the upcoming STAAR assessments. First, let me say that I know we all have opinions concerning students taking the STAAR assessments this year. From an educator's point of view, the STAAR assessments provide us with another data source to inform our students' instruction and intervention. All remote learners will have the option to participate in the STAAR assessment, which we highly encourage all remote students to do. All students in attendance on STAAR days will take the assessment. Guidance from Texas Education Agency states that:
- The State of Texas requires all students to participate in the STAAR assessment - there is no "opt-out" option.
- If your student does not participate in the STAAR assessment, an answer document will still be submitted to the state, and the student's state testing record will be incomplete.
- For Algebra students taking the STAAR EOC assessment, if your student does not participate in the STAAR EOC test, he/she is missing out on a testing opportunity to fulfill graduation requirements.
4/6 7th Writing STAAR
5/4 Alg. I EOC
5/6 8th Science STAAR
5/7 8th Social Studies STAAR
5/11 7th and 8th Math STAAR
5/12 7th and 8th Reading STAAR
Once again, the data gained from the STAAR assessments will allow us to improve our instructional practice.
Spring sports will start soon, including track, tennis, golf, and soccer. If your student is planning on trying out for these sports, they must have a physical loaded online in the SPORTSWARE app before tryouts. If your student does not have a physical on file, please do not wait until the last minute. If you have any questions, you can find the needed information on our athletic website https://irons.conroeisd.net/department/directory/athletics/ or reach out to one of our coaches.
Drill clinic and tryouts are scheduled for April 12-15 for 6th and 7th-grade students. All information can be found on the Irons Drill Team website. https://rbachman.wixsite.com/libertystars .
Please encourage your child to wear face coverings throughout the school day. We will continue practicing distancing in the classrooms, halls, and cafeteria. Additionally, we are now allowing students to go outside during all lunches to enjoy the sunshine and fresh air.
If your child is sick, please keep them home. If your child is exposed to or positive for COVID-19, please reach out to Irons at contactirons@conroeisd.net so we can provide the appropriate support and make the required notifications.
We will continue to be vigilant on campus and remind students of the expectations for masks, hand washing, touching, or eating outside of the cafeteria. It is our job to protect our school and keep Irons open.
