Irons Jr. High Newsletter

We Are Hawks!

Irons Family,

As I sit down to write the newsletter for the month, I always think to myself, will this be the month we have our next major surprise? All I can say is it is 20-21! I hope everyone was safe and warm throughout our significant snowstorm! If you or your family need assistance, please reach out to Irons. We have moved a few dates around to accommodate the extra days off. Our Spring Picture Day will now take place on April 13th. If your child has not completed course selection, please reach out to our counseling team for assistance.

I know that many families have questions concerning the upcoming STAAR assessments. First, let me say that I know we all have opinions concerning students taking the STAAR assessments this year. From an educator's point of view, the STAAR assessments provide us with another data source to inform our students' instruction and intervention. All remote learners will have the option to participate in the STAAR assessment, which we highly encourage all remote students to do. All students in attendance on STAAR days will take the assessment. Guidance from Texas Education Agency states that:

  • The State of Texas requires all students to participate in the STAAR assessment - there is no "opt-out" option.

  • If your student does not participate in the STAAR assessment, an answer document will still be submitted to the state, and the student's state testing record will be incomplete.

  • For Algebra students taking the STAAR EOC assessment, if your student does not participate in the STAAR EOC test, he/she is missing out on a testing opportunity to fulfill graduation requirements.

Once again, the data gained from the STAAR assessments will allow us to improve our instructional practice.

Spring sports will start soon, including track, tennis, golf, and soccer. If your student is planning on trying out for these sports, they must have a physical loaded online in the SPORTSWARE app before tryouts. If your student does not have a physical on file, please do not wait until the last minute. If you have any questions, you can find the needed information on our athletic website or reach out to one of our coaches.

Drill clinic and tryouts are scheduled for April 12-15 for 6th and 7th-grade students. All information can be found on the Irons Drill Team website. .

Please encourage your child to wear face coverings throughout the school day. We will continue practicing distancing in the classrooms, halls, and cafeteria. Additionally, we are now allowing students to go outside during all lunches to enjoy the sunshine and fresh air.

If your child is sick, please keep them home. If your child is exposed to or positive for COVID-19, please reach out to Irons at so we can provide the appropriate support and make the required notifications.

We will continue to be vigilant on campus and remind students of the expectations for masks, hand washing, touching, or eating outside of the cafeteria. It is our job to protect our school and keep Irons open.

Incoming 7th Grade Immunizations

Texas students entering 7th grade are required to have two additional immunizations prior to the first day of school. One dose of Tdap (Tetanus Diphtheria and Pertussis) is required within the last five years and one dose of MCV4 (Quadrivalent Meningococcal Conjugate) is required on or after 10 years of age. Many students may have already received one or both of these immunizations. Please review your child's immunization record or contact your child's healthcare provider to ensure your child has the required immunizations. Our school nurse is available if you have questions or need to update your child's immunization record. Taking care of these immunization requirements now will help facilitate a smooth transition to Jr. High.

Car Rider Line

  • Pull forward in the line to close up space between cars
  • Stay in the right-hand lane until you have picked up your child
  • Move to the left-hand lane to exit the drive
  • Do not park and have your child run across traffic
  • Please exit at a safe speed

Please remember that instruction begins at 8:50AM. It is so important for your child to arrive on campus in plenty of time to walk to their class, get some breakfast, put their things away, talk to their teacher and then prepare to start a day of learning. Please help them by arriving in the car line in plenty of time to drop them off and allow them the time they need to prepare for the day.

Students must be in their seat when the bell rings at 8:50AM. Students not in their seat will be counted as tardy.

Student are given 6 free tardies per nine weeks. Tardy seven will result in a one hour after school detention.
