Burlingame Intermediate School

Saturday, October 1, 2022

Dear BIS Family and Friends,

Thank you to those that were able to join me for the Walk & Talk and the Coffee with the Superintendent this week. We had small groups for both, but small can be mighty! I hope more of you will join me at the next Walk & Talk on October 28th at 9:00am. Just meet in front of the office.

We have ONE MORE WEEK, and we really Need your HELP! The PTA annual fundraiser has started and only 19% of our families have contributed with 1 week to go!!!! Funds raised support BIS Teacher Flex Funds, student school supplies, fun community events, and so much more. We want everyone to feel good about our school and supporting our PTA is an easy way to feel a part of the community. No amount is too small, our goal is to get as close to 100% as possible.

The week will end with a fun day at the Trojan Superhero Tournament for our students. Can you HELP? It is on Friday, Oct 3 and we need volunteers. The students will have a great time during PE and Connections to close out the fundraiser @ the Trojan Superhero Tournament! Please learn more and donate: https://burlingameintermediatepta.membershiptoolkit.com/fundraising

Next Thursday, Trojan Time will begin. Trojan Time will be Thursday mornings from 8:40am to 9:20 am This is a time for students to enjoy and have some time with an enjoyable activity and friends. We are doing our best to ensure students get one of their choices, as well as keep activity groups at a comfortable ratio depending on the activity.

Monday, October 3rd we have another Concrete Pour:

As before, there will be flaggers on site to keep staff and students safe from trucks.

  • Pump truck arrives at 7:00 AM
  • It should be done by 8:00 AM.

But be careful at drop-off.

Thank you!

We Need Your Help

As our students are getting more comfortable with the day to day at school, we wanted to share some concerns we are having. Many students are stopping to buy drinks at Starbucks or the corner liquor store, etc. and cutting it close to get to class on time. Most of the drinks we see are loaded with sugar and caffeine. Both ingredients are not a great start for their school day and go against our wellness policy. We appreciate your help in guiding your students to come to school on-time and without the new drink accessory. If students do arrive with a drink, it should be consumed prior to entering campus. All students should have a reusable water container to drink from during the day. Thank you for your help.

Trojan Time

This is taking longer than we thought...Some students are currently still choosing their top three choices for our weekly Trojan Time. This time is for students to take a break from the demand of school and do something different, learn something new, get a new hobby. Ask your child what they have chosen. We are waiting for all students to submit their preferences so we can schedule them. Trojan Time starts Thursday, October 6th. If students do not submit a choice, a choice will be made for them.

Identifications Cards (IDs)- Students should have their student ID everyday.

Please have your child carry their BIS ID Card with them. Your student needs the card for library, lunch, and other school related activities. Please share with your student(s) that they will need their ID card daily at school.

Warmly,

Mrs. Erica Gilbert, Principal

Dr. Jermaine Williams, Asst. Principal

Mr. Tony Tsujisaka, Asst. Principal

Homework Help!

Did you know all of California now has access to HelpNow free online homework help?

The California State Library provides free online tutoring for California K-12 students, available through public libraries. Through HelpNow, live real-time homework assistance is available 24 hours a day by laptop, tablet, or phone from qualified tutors using state curriculum and standards.

24/7 assistance is available in English and Spanish for Language Arts and Mathematics.

Every day between 10:00 am and 10:00 pm, assistance is available in core K-12 subjects in the following languages:

  • English
  • Spanish
  • Mandarin
  • Cantonese
  • Vietnamese
  • Tagalog

Tutors can provide a virtual whiteboard, conduct live audio interactions with students, and work with learners on a wide range of concepts. Students are expected to work through the content and learn from the feedback. Tutors do not provide answers — they provide guidance and help. Tutoring sessions may be monitored for completeness and pedagogical effectiveness. All tutors have passed background checks and possess, at a minimum, a bachelor's degree.

Anyone using a computer inside of California can benefit from the live “HelpNow” program. Simply click on this link to get started with a live tutoring session now. The average wait time is 23 seconds.

Additionally, users who have a valid library card can log into the service and receive additional benefits. Learners can request to continue working with their preferred tutors or access a “writing lab” to drop off written work and receive feedback. Students can pose a question and get a written answer returned to them, review past sessions, and send and receive messages to tutors and organize tasks.

The HelpNow app is available on iOS and Andriod platforms via their app stores. The app is designed to function on smartphones as well as tablets.

The HelpNow platform is ADA compliant and offers a toll-free help number and an audio tutoring option. The service conforms to section 508 Standards developed by the Web Accessibility Initiative.

SamTrans Bus Behavior

For those families that are relying on the bus (Route 46 from BIS) to get home, I need you to ask your students to remember our school rules. Students are under the rules of school. until they get home. We have been hearing about our students behaving badly on the bus, using foul language towards others, put downs and other unkind behavior. I ask our students to behave as if we are on the bus and watching. Take care of eachother. Stand up when others are being put down. We need UPSTANDERS! Make yourself proud, make all of us proud treat others with kindness. We are here to help, if you need us!
