Kindergarten News ACES
Week Of October 31st
Highlights From Last Week....
In Reader's Workshop, we continued to look at the picture AND the first letter of the word to see if it makes sense! We are starting to get the hang of this skill! This is where the letter sound knowledge will help immensely! We increased our stamina to 11 minutes this week! We will continue to practice our other strategies as well: looking at the picture while we read, trading out books, practicing turning and talking.
In Writer's Workshop, we are still working on drawing stories of a small moment in our lives. This is a true story that happened in their lives. We have been working on writing with partners and across the pages. This week we learned how to add action and speech bubbles to our work. We are really moving along. The kids LOVE Writer's Workshop!
In Math, we worked on decomposing numbers with totals up to 10. We wrote numerals 1-10 in order. We learned how to write the numbers and use the numeral to represent a quantity. We also solved word problems by acting them out.
In Phonics, we practiced letter sounds and learned the sight words "my" and "have", please practice these words at home. Our letters of the week were "s" and "d".
In Social Studies, we finished our community helpers unit. We had a visit from the Athol Fire Department to talk about fire safety. Please make sure that you change the batteries in your smoke detectors at home!

I look forward to meeting you all!
A Note from Mrs. Melanson
We are excited to start using the laptops and Ipads for math, literacy centers, and free choice time. One of our centers in math this week will be Splash Math, which is a program on the laptop that helps practice a variety of math skills. We will also be using an app on the Ipad to practice our letter writing during literacy centers.
Thank you to all that read and practice skills at home with your children! If you have any questions about what you can be practicing at home, please contact me and I can give you specific things to practice with your child. But, in general, letter and number writing, reading books to create a love of reading, and letter names and sounds are the most important at this point.
Thanks to all that offered to bring in goodies for our Halloween party on Monday. Our class does not have any severe allergies, so most foods are ok. I can't wait to see what great storybook characters come to school on Monday!!
As always...call, email or write me with any questions or concerns.
